Crouch End pub The Queens reopens after grand makeover

The majestic 120-year-old Crouch End institution, The Queens, will reopen its doors this week following a grand makeover. This legendary north London pub, built between 1899 and 1902 as a companion piece to Green Lanes' iconic The Salisbury, is described by CAMRA as a 'superb example of a pub from the golden age of pub building'. The Grade II-listed venue boasts a magnificent mosaic floor, opulent stained glass windows, an ornate ceiling, and intricate floral and geometric friezes. Architectural historian Nikolaus Pevsner once declared it 'one of suburban London's outstanding grand pubs'.

New ownership and refurbishment

In January, The Queens was taken over by Urban Pubs & Bars, which operates 68 other establishments across London. The pub closed at the start of June for refurbishment work and will reopen on June 17, with a big relaunch party scheduled for June 26. While the exact details of the refurbishment remain unclear, it is expected that as many of The Queens' original features as possible will be preserved, especially given the strong local sentiment. Crouch Enders have a history of ensuring the pub's heritage features remain intact. When some stained glass windows were replaced with clear glass, outcry from concerned locals led to their reinstatement. Similarly, when an original screen separating two rooms was removed in 1985, locals successfully campaigned to get it reinstated.

New menu and special offers

With the new look comes a new menu, featuring dishes like whipped chicken liver parfait with brioche, sour cherries, and pickles as a starter; Cornish roast hake with oyster beignet, ratatouille, and capers for main; and sticky toffee pudding for dessert. To celebrate the reopening, The Queens is offering half-price food on June 22, 23 (lunch only), and 24.
