Aldeburgh named among UK's best seaside towns

Aldeburgh, a charming seaside town on the Suffolk coast, has been named among the UK's best in a Which? survey, scoring an overall destination rating of 80%. The town, located just a short train or car journey from London, received four out of five stars for scenery, ambience, food and drink, and shopping, and three stars for its beach, waterfront, attractions, and affordability.

Survey details and ranking

The Which? survey, which polled more than 3,500 respondents, placed Aldeburgh fifth overall among UK seaside towns and villages, tied with Crail, Frinton-on-Sea, and Portmeirion at 80%. The top spot went to Bamburgh in Northumberland with 84%, followed by Tynemouth (82%), and St Andrews (81%). Aldeburgh's unspoilt coastline and pastel-hued Victorian buildings were highlighted as key draws.

Fish and chips acclaim

Aldeburgh is renowned for its award-winning fish and chip shops. The family-run Aldeburgh Fish and Chip Shop, established in 1967, serves chips made from locally sourced potatoes and a variety of fish. The Golden Galleon on High Street offers pies and burgers, with The Upper Deck Diner providing indoor seating. One TripAdvisor reviewer called The Golden Galleon's haddock and chips "the best in Suffolk," while another praised The Upper Deck Diner for "excellent fish and chips at a reasonable price."

Notable connections

Expert comment

Rory Boland, Editor of Which? Travel, said: "The North East has emerged as this year’s favourite seaside spot, a reflection of its outstanding beaches and the fact that holidays here can be fantastic value for money. It also shows that there are special seaside towns in every corner of the UK. From Swanage to Plockton, Southwold to Conwy, you’ll have a great time in many of the country’s lesser-known destinations, and should save some money too."
