Top Gun 3 Officially Confirmed with Tom Cruise Returning as Maverick
Paramount Pictures has officially confirmed the development of Top Gun 3, with Tom Cruise set to reprise his iconic role as flying ace Pete "Maverick" Mitchell. The announcement was made during the annual CinemaCon presentation this week, marking one of the first major film confirmations in Paramount's new era following its merger with Skydance.
Production Details and Cast Uncertainty
The 63-year-old Cruise will headline the third installment in the action drama series, though no other returning cast members have been confirmed at this time. Jerry Bruckheimer is confirmed to return as producer, while director Joseph Kosinski's involvement remains uncertain. Bruckheimer previously revealed in 2024 that they had pitched Cruise a story he liked, but noted the actor's busy schedule could affect timing.
"We pitched Tom a story he liked," Bruckheimer said. "But he's a very in-demand actor and he's got a lot of movies lined up, so we have to wait and see."
Following a Blockbuster Success
The confirmation comes after the massive success of 2022's Top Gun: Maverick, which grossed $1.5 billion globally and earned six Oscar nominations, including Best Picture. That film served as a sequel to Tony Scott's 1986 original, which launched Cruise's career as a top action star.
Cruise himself addressed the potential for a third film last year, stating: "We're thinking and talking about many different stories and what could we do and what's possible. It took me 35 years to figure out Top Gun: Maverick. So, all of these things we're working on, we're discussing Days of Thunder and Top Gun: Maverick."
Paramount's Strategic Priorities
The third Top Gun film has been a priority for Paramount since completing its merger with Skydance in 2025. David Ellison, who now leads the combined entity, has marked the project as particularly important. The studio landscape is further evolving with Paramount's planned acquisition of Warner Bros in a $111 billion deal, meaning Top Gun 3 will ultimately exist under this new, larger corporate umbrella.
Ellison is also reportedly interested in developing a follow-up to Cruise's 1990 racing film Days of Thunder. During this week's presentation, Ellison emphasized his goal to release approximately 30 films annually under the Paramount-Warner banner.
Broader Studio Slate and Cruise's Upcoming Projects
Other films highlighted in Paramount's upcoming slate include:
- Scary Movie 7
- Taylor Sheridan's adaptation of Call of Duty
- Damien Chazelle's new film starring Cillian Murphy
- A new horror film set in the Longlegs universe
Cruise, who recently appeared in what was billed as the "final" Mission: Impossible film, will next star in Digger, the highly anticipated new project from Oscar-winning director Alejandro G. Iñárritu. The dark comedy was previewed at CinemaCon, with attendees noting Cruise appears nearly unrecognizable as a billionaire who triggers an environmental disaster.
The official confirmation of Top Gun 3 represents a significant moment for both Cruise's career and Paramount's strategic direction, though many details—including supporting cast, director, and release timeline—remain to be finalized.
