One of the most beloved comedies from the 1990s, frequently hailed as a masterpiece of the genre, has just landed on Amazon Prime Video for UK audiences. The Big Lebowski, the iconic film from the Coen Brothers, is now available to stream, offering a chance to revisit or discover its unique shaggy-dog charm.
The Story of The Dude
Directed by Joel and Ethan Coen, the film follows the misadventures of Jeffrey 'The Dude' Lebowski, brilliantly portrayed by Jeff Bridges. The Dude is a laid-back slacker and passionate bowler whose life is turned upside down by a case of mistaken identity. After being assaulted by thugs who confused him for a millionaire with the same name, The Dude seeks restitution for his ruined rug.
He tracks down the wealthy Jeffrey Lebowski (David Huddleston), who instead of offering compensation, hires him for a job. The millionaire's wife, Bunny (Tara Reid), has been kidnapped, and The Dude is tasked with delivering the ransom money. He is joined on this chaotic mission by his volatile friend, Walter Sobchak (John Goodman), and the gentle Donny (Steve Buscemi).
From Mixed Reviews to Cult Status
Upon its initial release, The Big Lebowski received a mixed critical reception. However, in the years since, it has achieved massive cult classic status and is now consistently cited as one of the finest comedy films ever made.
Its cultural impact was formally recognised in 2014 when it was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress for being 'culturally, historically or aesthetically significant.'
The film holds a 79% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The critics' consensus on the site notes that while its shaggy dog story won't satisfy everyone, those who 'abide' will find 'a rambling succession of comic delights.' It highlights that Jeff Bridges' laconic performance is what really 'ties the movie together.'
Enduring Critical Acclaim
Retrospective reviews continue to praise the film's unique genius. Filmspotting wrote that 25 years later, the movie 'where every detail matters and doesn’t matter at all, is as hilarious as ever – and more poignant, man.'
The Washington Post applauded the Coen Brothers' 'inspired, absurdist taste for weird, peculiar Americana,' stating they had defined their own bizarre subgenre and that 'no one does it better.'
Much of the praise was reserved for Bridges' performance. The Detroit Free Press noted that he 'completely gets the Coens,' while the Daily Telegraph called him 'an absolute standout.'
The Dude Abides Today
In a testament to the character's lasting appeal, Jeff Bridges reprised his role as The Dude just last month on Jimmy Kimmel Live. Sipping a White Russian, he delivered a message to the world: 'Hey, world. Yeah, the Dude here. Can we just all calm the f**k down?'
He continued, 'I’m talking about all the wars, the fighting, the cancelling. I mean, let’s just chill out, man... This aggression will not stand, right? So, let’s just abide, abide together.'
Regarding a potential sequel, Bridges has stated he would 'of course' be open to returning, mentioning that his co-star Julianne Moore would often fantasise about it. However, he conceded it seems unlikely the Coen Brothers would embark on the project.
The Big Lebowski is streaming now on Amazon Prime Video.
