Man, 56, in tears as he reunites with mum after 51 years apart on Long Lost Family
Tearful reunion after 51 years on Long Lost Family

A man who last saw his mother when he was just five years old has been emotionally reunited with her after an agonising 51-year separation, in a heart-wrenching episode of ITV's Long Lost Family.

A Childhood Fractured in Reading

Alan Parker, now 56 and working as a car salesman in County Meath, Ireland, was the eldest of three children raised in Reading. His world shattered when his mother, Anne, left the family home over five decades ago. He never saw her again and was never given a clear explanation for her departure.

Alan recalls 'heated arguments' between his parents and believes his father was later granted sole custody. The trauma of the event was so profound that he has no memory of his mother's face. 'Maybe it was too traumatic for me,' he reflects. 'My mum leaving was one of those events that you want to block out.'

The Search for Answers and a Mother

Desperate for answers and longing to reconnect, Alan turned to the team at Long Lost Family for help. The show's researchers embarked on a mission to trace Anne, uncertain if she was even still alive. Their investigation led them through extended family members before finally discovering that Anne was now living on the South Coast of England.

Initially hesitant about being found, Anne agreed to speak with co-host Nicky Campbell. She revealed she felt trapped in an unhappy marriage and believed it was 'safer' to leave. She had planned to have her children with her after staying in a bedsit, but within a year her husband had moved them all away, leaving her with no way to find them.

'I've often thought back to what I've missed out over the years with their lives,' Anne confessed. 'There's always a part of me that's been missing. You have no idea, no way of finding out.' She was profoundly relieved to learn her son bore her no ill will.

A Life-Changing Update and a Healing Reunion

In an exclusive clip from the episode, co-host Davina McCall delivers the news Alan had longed a lifetime to hear. When asked what he wanted to know from his mum, Alan said, 'I want to know what she's been doing for the last 51 years really and I want to know if she's happy...but I don't even know if my mum is still alive.'

Davina then revealed the search was over: his mother had been found and wanted to meet him. Alan immediately broke down in tears, overwhelmed by the prospect of a reunion after so long.

The emotional episode, airing Tuesday, January 14, 2026 at 9pm on ITV1, documents their subsequent meeting near Anne's home. Afterwards, Alan described a profound sense of relief. 'I feel lighter, like there's no weight on my shoulders or anything,' he shared, signalling the beginning of a healing journey for both mother and son.
