Apple TV has been on a roll lately with hits like Margo's Got Money Troubles and Widow's Bay, but one series is being criminally overlooked: Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed. This comedy-thriller, starring Tatiana Maslany, has earned glowing reviews yet flies under the radar.
A Modern Twist on Rear Window
Showrunner David J Rosen drew inspiration from Alfred Hitchcock's 1954 classic Rear Window. The series follows Paula (Tatiana Maslany), a single mother caught in a stressful custody battle while working as an underappreciated fact checker. She finds solace chatting with Trevor (Brandon Flynn), a webcam boy, sharing intimate video calls. But when she witnesses Trevor being attacked and kidnapped during a call, she discovers he was scamming her—and the attack was staged. This plunges her into a dangerous underground world of organized crime.
Balancing Comedy and Thrills
Executive producer David Gordon Green, director of Halloween Ends and Pineapple Express, praises the show's rollercoaster nature. Brandon Flynn notes the series handles sex work with a delicate hand, neither condemning nor glorifying it. Showrunner Rosen emphasizes that the scam is a one-off situation, not a reflection on the industry.
Tatiana Maslany, 40, delivers a standout performance, seamlessly blending humor and tension. Co-star Murray, who plays Frank, calls her 'singular and extraordinary,' while Jake Johnson, known for New Girl, plays Paula's mean-spirited ex-husband Karl, relishing the dramatic shift.
Unpredictable Twists and Genre Fusion
The series combines psychological thriller tropes with relatable domestic elements, humor, and wit. With six of ten episodes currently streaming on Apple TV and the finale set for July 15, it's a binge-worthy gem that deserves more buzz.
