Halle Bailey Celebrates Joyful On-Set Moments with Regé-Jean Page in New Romantic Comedy

For anyone who has ever imagined being swept off their feet by Bridgerton sensation Regé-Jean Page, actress Halle Bailey is living that fantasy. The two stars of the upcoming romantic comedy You, Me and Tuscany enjoyed what might be considered the perfect summer last year, filming for six weeks in the picturesque Italian countryside.

A Dreamlike Filming Experience in Tuscany

Bailey recently sat down with director Kat Coiro to discuss the making of the film, which follows New Yorker Anna (played by Bailey) as she travels to Italy and becomes entangled in a fake engagement scheme with a wealthy Italian man. The plot thickens when Matteo's adopted brother Michael (Page) enters the scene, creating a classic romantic triangle.

"Just to watch Regé perform and serenade Anna's character, it was a joyous moment on set," Bailey revealed about a particular scene where the characters sing Mario's hit song Let Me Love You. "Everybody was laughing, and we were all very impressed by Regé's vocals. It was pretty darn good. I told him: 'You killed that.'"

Perfect Casting and Instant Chemistry

Despite their convincing on-screen chemistry, Bailey and Page had only met weeks before filming began. Director Kat Coiro explained that the casting process was remarkably straightforward: "In some movies, you have a big list of people that you go through. Here, it was just Halle and just Regé. Basically, if they had said no, we wouldn't have made the movie, is how we felt."

The pair first connected at the Met Gala, where Bailey admits she was already "a huge fan of him" from his Bridgerton days. Their instant rapport translated beautifully to the screen, with Coiro noting that Page brought necessary "gravity" to balance Bailey's character's chaotic energy.

Representation Matters in Romance Cinema

Both Bailey and Coiro emphasized the significance of having two Black leads in a major studio romantic comedy. "I feel grateful that I'm part of a movie that has two Black leads," Bailey stated. "It's crazy that we say that it's rare for that in rom-coms. It shouldn't be that way, but it's really nice that we have, especially a studio like Universal, backing us for a film like this."

The film incorporates authentic details that Black audiences will recognize, such as Anna protecting her edges from vineyard sprinklers and wearing a durag at night. "It would be weird if we didn't mention that edges in water get ruined," Bailey noted. "It's really cool to see that in a movie like this."

A Film for Young Women Finding Their Way

Beyond its romantic plot, You, Me and Tuscany aims to resonate with young women navigating their twenties. Bailey related strongly to her character's journey: "I feel very much like I have it together some days, then don't have it all figured out other days. I just really admired how it was a real reflection of a young woman right now, today."

Director Coiro added a poignant perspective: "We talked a lot on set about how [in order] to become a badass middle-aged woman, you have to make these mistakes as a 20-something woman. We live in a time where people are so afraid of making mistakes, so afraid of putting themselves out there, so afraid of failure."

Critical Reception and Release Details

Early reviews describe the film as "14-karat film fluff" that provides "a sun-dappled fantasy" perfect for escapism. With stunning Tuscan landscapes serving as backdrop to the romantic entanglements, the film offers what one critic called "property porn on the level of Kate Winslet's cottage in The Holiday."

You, Me and Tuscany arrives in UK cinemas on Friday, April 10, promising audiences a lighthearted romantic escape with meaningful representation at its core.
