Disney Plus has released a gripping new crime drama that offers a fresh perspective on the notorious legacy of Pablo Escobar. All eight episodes of "Dear Killer Nannies" are now available for streaming, presenting a unique narrative inspired by the life of Escobar's son, Sebastián Marroquín.
A Personal Story of Crime and Family
The series, co-created by Marroquín himself, delves into his bizarre upbringing in Medellín, Colombia, where immense wealth and luxury coexisted with constant surveillance and extreme violence. Born Juan Pablo Escobar, Marroquín changed his name after his father's death in 1993 and left Colombia to distance himself from the cartel's crimes.
At age 16, Marroquín was with his father in his final moments, becoming the last person to speak to Escobar before he was shot by law enforcement. In subsequent years, Marroquín has written about his father's "sins," providing the foundation for this dramatic exploration.
A Different Take on the Narcos Genre
"Dear Killer Nannies" follows young Juan, nicknamed Juampi, as he gradually becomes disillusioned with his infamous father, portrayed by John Leguizamo. Unlike Netflix's "Narcos," which focused on the Drug Enforcement Administration's campaign against Escobar, this series offers an intimate family perspective.
Co-creator Sebastián Ortega emphasized the distinct approach: "There have been so many stories about narcos. Too many. But when I met Sebastian, I thought: 'This is totally different.' It's not about Pablo Escobar – it's about his son."
Ortega elaborated on the show's central conflict: "He's slowly realising that what he thinks is normal really isn't, and that his dad is one of the worst criminals in the world. Imagine realising your dad is Pablo Escobar. It's so bizarre! You are right there, witnessing horrible crimes and then getting a big hug."
Critical Reception and Availability
Early reviews have been positive, with The Guardian awarding the series four stars and comparing it to "The Sopranos" as a "surprisingly gut-punching" blend of violence and tragicomedy. The title itself reflects the show's central tension – being cared for by people who also committed murders.
"Dear Killer Nannies" is available to stream on Disney Plus in the UK and Hulu in the United States. All eight episodes dropped simultaneously, allowing viewers to binge the complete story of a son grappling with his father's monstrous legacy.
