Former A&E doctor turned aesthetician Ben Taylor-Davies explains that the goal is firmer, smoother, more elastic skin with reduced fine lines and pores.

How Cadaver Collagen Is Harvested

Dr. Taylor-Davies describes the process: donated skin from a deceased donor who consented to its use is processed to remove cells and genetic material while preserving structural proteins like collagen and elastin. The tissue is then purified, sterilized, and turned into tiny injectable particles. This material is medically termed 'processed human dermal matrix' and is marketed under brand names such as Elravie Re20 in South Korea.

Legal Status in the UK

Cadaver collagen is illegal in the UK for cosmetic use. Dr. Taylor-Davies notes that UK regulations prohibit injecting human-derived products, and he does not foresee approval soon. Currently, injectable cellular materials in the UK are plant or animal derived, such as polynucleotides from fish. While human skin is used for reconstructive surgery and wound care, cosmetic applications face strict ethical and safety controls.

Ethical and Safety Concerns

Dr. Taylor-Davies raises questions about provenance, even for products sourced from donated skin. He warns that human-derived products have appeared in UK clinics without proper regulatory approval, lawful supply chains, donor consent, traceability, or safety controls. Safety risks include bruising, swelling, infection, inflammation, lumps, and accidental injection into blood vessels. Additionally, theoretical risks of immune reactions, contamination, or infection exist if donor screening or manufacturing fails. Recent cases of botched botulinum toxin treatments highlight the dangers of unlicensed products.

Evidence and Efficacy

Initial studies show improvements in skin density, elasticity, wrinkles, pores, and hydration after cadaver collagen injections. Dr. Taylor-Davies notes that patients may experience smoother, firmer, better-hydrated skin with softer fine lines and less visible pores. Because the material comes from human skin, it may more closely resemble natural dermal structure than animal-derived collagen. However, the studies were small, lasted only 20 weeks, and were conducted by product developers. Dr. Taylor-Davies concludes that while the science is plausible, the products are being marketed more than tested.
