Coronation Street is set to unveil one of its most shocking secrets yet as newcomer Maggie Driscoll, played by Pauline McLynn, is revealed to be hiding a deadly past.
The Killer Secret Behind the Rovers Return
Father Ted's beloved Mrs Doyle actress Pauline McLynn joined the cobbles as Maggie Driscoll earlier this year, bringing sharp one-liners that evoked memories of legendary character Blanche Hunt. However, there's much more to this battleaxe than meets the eye.
Maggie Driscoll has taken a life, and the truth will be exposed in a special flashback episode scheduled towards the end of the year. The revelation promises to send shockwaves through the Weatherfield community.
Family Drama and Hidden Crimes
The storyline intensified when Eva Price, portrayed by Catherine Tyldesley, returned to Coronation Street to take over the Rovers Return, only to discover that her monster-in-law Maggie had put down the funds and claimed her place behind the bar.
What followed has been a series of snarky exchanges between the feuding women, though Maggie has shown a softer side in her support of vulnerable Asha Alahan, played by Tanisha Gorey.
Pauline McLynn confirmed to Metro that there were some OMG moments ahead for her character, but few expected the revelation that Maggie is actually a killer.
Christmas Bombshell and Future Storylines
The circumstances surrounding Maggie's deadly act remain a closely guarded secret. Was it accidental or something more sinister? These questions will be answered in the dramatic flashback episode.
A source told The Sun: 'When viewers see whose death Maggie was behind, it will really send shockwaves through Weatherfield and life will never quite be the same again for her.'
The killing occurred before Maggie moved into the Rovers Return with her son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren, and none of her family members are aware of her dark secret.
Producer Kate Brooks recently promised a Driscoll-centric Christmas Day episode filled with laughter, community spirit and joviality. However, with Maggie's deadly secret looming, the festivities could be dramatically disrupted.
Brooks revealed: 'There's loads going on Christmas Day. Christmas Day itself is a real family affair. And the Driscolls are very much at the heart of Christmas Day. It's a proper pub Christmas Day! It's very community based, very lively. Secrets are exposed and whatnot.'
The Driscolls won't be the only family facing drama as the year concludes. Additional storylines will feature Ronnie and Debbie's wedding preparations, while Carla, Lisa and Becky's storyline intensifies around Christmas time with several major twists promised.
Brooks also highlighted the important Todd and Theo storyline, noting: 'Christmas is often a time where there's a lot of spikes in calls to the Samaritans. We wanted to really show Todd and Theo's journey in the lead and the build to Christmas.'
Viewers can expect a special episode focused primarily on their relationship, told in a completely unique way that promises to pack an emotional punch.
