Coronation Street Stalker Mal Roper Escapes Murder Plot, Blackmails Bernie Winter

Coronation Street is currently under fire for being packed with villains, from domestic abusers to historic murderers. However, in an upcoming murder twist, one of these baddies will be killed, thinning the ranks in Weatherfield. Yet, one certified villain, Mal Roper, portrayed by Tim Treloar, has apparently avoided the chopping block. His slimy and insidious stalking of Bernie Winter, played by Jane Hazlegrove, is set to take a darker turn.

Mal's Blackmail Plot Against Bernie

Metro has learned that an upcoming storyline twist will see Mal use his knowledge of Bernie's son, Kit Green's violent attack on him, to his advantage. After Kit, portrayed by Jacob Roberts, assaulted Mal, triggering a heart attack and landing him in Weatherfield General Hospital, Mal regains consciousness. To keep quiet about who put him in hospital, Mal makes it clear that the only way he will stay silent is if Bernie has sex with him.

This leaves Bernie with a hideous decision: spend the night with the man who has tortured her and cheat on her beloved husband, Dev Alahan, played by Jimmi Harkishin, or risk Mal destroying Kit's life by exposing the attack. The tension escalates as Bernie grapples with this moral dilemma, highlighting the psychological torment inflicted by Mal's obsession.

Mal's Stalking History and Escalation

Mal's stalking of Bernie began when he preyed on her during a vulnerable moment, following the loss of her son, Paul Foreman's true love, Billy Mayhew. He found Bernie in a seriously inebriated state and spent a drug-fuelled night with her, despite her refusal to cheat. This left Bernie riddled with guilt and terrified that Dev would discover the truth.

After Bernie made it clear she wanted nothing further to do with him, Mal did not back down. He preyed on Roy Cropper, played by David Neilson, taking on a job to re-wire his café, placing himself as close to Bernie as possible. His behavior escalated to standing outside her house in the middle of the night and locking himself in the café with her, where he delivered a desperate monologue about his inability to stop thinking about her, chillingly referring to her as 'my Bernie'.

When Bernie reminded him she was married to Dev, Mal darkened further, accusing her of being a 'cheap tease' and gripping her wrist as she tried to escape. This violent crescendo set the stage for Kit's intervention, leading to the current blackmail plot.

Kit's Involvement and the Upcoming Threat

Kit, who had earlier been informed by Bernie about Mal's terrifying behavior, took matters into his own hands by battering Mal, resulting in the heart attack. While Bernie was initially arrested for the attack, she was released after Kit confessed. Horrified but understanding his reasoning, Bernie fled to Tenerife for a holiday with Dev, pleading with Kit to keep out of trouble.

However, neither anticipated Mal waking up. Next week, Kit becomes aware that a witness to the attack has come forward, forcing him to think on his feet to shut down the new threat to his secret. He is further shaken to learn that Mal has regained consciousness, setting the stage for a dramatic confrontation.

Judging by what is to come, it is clear that Mal either remembers or quickly learns who attacked him, intensifying the blackmail and putting Bernie and Kit in even greater peril. As Coronation Street continues to explore dark themes, this storyline promises to keep viewers on the edge of their seats.
