The Shard to Transform into Giant Red Stocking on Christmas Eve
Shard's Giant Red Stocking to Light Up London Skyline

London's iconic skyline is set for a spectacular festive upgrade this Christmas Eve, as The Shard prepares to transform into a giant, glowing red stocking.

A Supersized Festive Tradition

On December 24, the capital's tallest building will reinterpret the classic tradition of hanging a stocking for Santa Claus on a monumental scale. As night falls, the top 20 floors of the skyscraper will be bathed in light to create the unmistakable shape of a Christmas stocking.

The impressive installation will be brought to life using almost 600 energy-efficient LED lights. It is projected to be visible from more than 40 miles away, ensuring Londoners across the city can spot the glowing beacon in the night sky.

Guiding Santa's Sleigh

The luminous stocking will shine from sunset until around midnight, perfectly timed to act as a guiding light for Santa's sleigh as he makes his annual journey across London. This dazzling display forms a key part of The Shard's festive art programme, which was first unveiled in November.

Throughout the holiday season, The Shard's spire operates as a rotating canvas, typically changing its illuminated designs every hour. This year's schedule is reported to include vibrant rainbow flashes and a festive reindeer that appears to dart across the skyline.

A New London Landmark

The giant stocking is more than just a decoration; it's a bold piece of public art designed to capture the imagination of the city. By scaling up a beloved Christmas custom, The Shard provides a unique and shareable moment for residents and visitors alike, creating a new luminous landmark for the capital's festive period.
