Alton Towers Resort has officially opened its new Minecraft-themed attraction, Meet the Mobs, and we were there on opening day to experience it. The immersive land, which replaces the former Cloud Cuckoo Land, brings the popular video game to life with interactive elements, character meet-and-greets, and a new family rollercoaster.
What is Minecraft Meet the Mobs?
Meet the Mobs is a dedicated area within Alton Towers that features a variety of Minecraft-inspired activities. The centrepiece is the 'Minecraft: The Ride' rollercoaster, which takes riders on a journey through blocky landscapes and past iconic mobs like Creepers and Endermen. The land also includes a play area, a building zone where guests can create their own Minecraft structures, and a shop selling exclusive merchandise.
According to Alton Towers, the attraction cost £10 million to develop and took two years to build. It is designed for families with young children, with the rollercoaster having a height requirement of just 0.9 metres.
Our Opening Day Experience
We arrived at the park at 9am, just as the gates opened. The new area was already busy, with queues forming for the rollercoaster. The ride itself lasts approximately two minutes and features several drops and turns, as well as projection effects that simulate being inside the game. The theming is impressive, with giant blocks and pixelated decorations throughout the land.
One highlight was the meet-and-greet with Minecraft characters. We saw a Creeper and a Zombie walking around, posing for photos. The performers were energetic and stayed in character, which added to the immersive experience. The building zone was also popular, with children (and adults) using oversized foam blocks to construct houses and castles.
Ticket Deals and Prices
Admission to Meet the Mobs is included in standard park entry, but Alton Towers is offering several deals. Early bird tickets are available from £29 per person when booked online in advance, compared to £62 on the gate. Family tickets for four people start at £99. Annual pass holders get unlimited access to the new area.
According to a spokesperson for Alton Towers, 'We wanted to make this attraction accessible to as many families as possible, so we've kept prices competitive.' Guests are advised to book online to secure the best rates.
Impact and Future Plans
The opening of Meet the Mobs is expected to boost visitor numbers by 20% this season, according to industry analysts. It is part of a wider trend of theme parks partnering with video game franchises to attract younger audiences. Alton Towers has not announced any further Minecraft-themed expansions, but the success of this land could lead to more.
