Women Embrace Makeup-Free Confidence in Beauty Shift

Three Quarters of Women Now Confident Without Makeup, Report Shows

A significant generational shift toward natural beauty has led to three quarters of women feeling skin confident and comfortable leaving the house makeup-free, according to a major new report. The study, which surveyed 5,000 females, reveals that 65% of Gen Z and 52% of Millennials believe they feel more comfortable in their skin than they did five years ago.

Past Struggles and Current Confidence

Despite this growing confidence, the research uncovered past challenges. 66% of respondents admitted their skin had negatively affected their personal relationships previously, while 19% had skipped social events due to a bad skin day, and 22% had avoided going out entirely because of skin concerns.

However, the tide appears to be turning. 62% of women reported that having a skincare routine helps them feel more confident, with this sentiment highest among Gen Z (72%) and Millennials (69%). Additionally, 63% claimed that 'good skin days' can now entirely transform their mood for the day ahead.

The Power of Skincare Routines

The insights come from a comprehensive Liz Earle Beauty Co. report that examined women's feelings about their skin, covering everything from ingredient understanding to confidence levels and daily rituals. Sarah Carr, facialist and lifestyle ambassador for Liz Earle Beauty Co., emphasized the importance of skin confidence: "Our skin confidence has a big impact on how we feel generally. When we do feel good about our skin, it empowers us to be more present and engaged in everyday life."

The research found that women use an average of three skincare products, with 70% describing their routine as 'simple and consistent.' Only 15% confessed to having detailed, multi-step routines, according to figures from OnePoll.com.

Purchasing Patterns and Product Overwhelm

When it comes to buying skincare products, several factors influence decisions:

  • Price point (48%) remains the primary consideration
  • Natural ingredients (41%) follow closely
  • Quality ingredient sourcing (30%) also plays a significant role

Other influencing factors include scientific backing (27%), sustainability and ethics (17%), and brand heritage and reputation (13%).

Despite these clear preferences, many women still struggle with skincare decisions. 17% confessed to feeling overwhelmed when buying products, while 16% reported feeling confused. Additionally, 41% admitted they don't feel confident in their understanding of skincare ingredients and their functions.

Product overwhelm appears widespread, with 78% of women believing there are too many new skincare products constantly cycling onto the market to keep track of.

The Shift Toward Natural Beauty

Sarah Carr from the beauty brand highlighted the broader trend: "We're seeing a shift toward embracing natural beauty and feeling comfortable going makeup free. Taking the time to invest in a skincare routine has become a form of self-care, helping women to ultimately nurture their skin and their wellbeing."

She added: "People clearly benefit from these routines, but they're steering away from buzz words and hundreds of 'new' products cycling onto the market, craving straightforward products with natural, quality ingredients with the scientific backing to produce the results they promise."

The report suggests that while women are becoming more confident in their natural skin, they're seeking simplicity and transparency in their skincare choices, moving away from overwhelming product cycles toward trusted, effective solutions.
