Christopher Kane Appointed Creative Director at Mulberry
In a significant move for the British fashion industry, designer Christopher Kane has been named the new creative director of heritage brand Mulberry. The announcement has been met with widespread enthusiasm across the fashion world, with Kane's first collection for the label reportedly scheduled for unveiling at London Fashion Week in 2027.
A Generational Talent Takes the Helm
Christopher Kane, widely regarded as a generational talent within fashion circles, will relaunch Mulberry's women's ready-to-wear collection. The Glaswegian-born designer's debut is expected to premiere in September at London Fashion Week before becoming available in stores and online from January 2027.
This appointment marks Mulberry's return to the catwalk after an absence since February 2017 and represents a welcome comeback for Kane, whose celebrity following includes Michelle Obama, Rihanna, Alexa Chung, Kendrick Lamar, and FKA twigs. The addition of Mulberry to the London Fashion Week schedule provides a substantial boost to the event, which has recently faced challenges in attracting major brand participation.
Kane's Fashion Journey and Creative Vision
Kane first gained recognition after graduating from Central Saint Martins in 2006, when he founded his eponymous label alongside his sister Tammy. His designs quickly became beloved for their unique blend of fun, hedonism, and smart cultural references, making them red carpet favorites.
The designer's career has seen several notable milestones:
- In 2013, luxury conglomerate Kering acquired a 51% stake in his business
- He repurchased his label in 2018 before closing it during the pandemic in 2020
- He has previously collaborated with Donatella Versace and designed collections for Topshop
- His awards include the Vogue Fashion Fund and four British Fashion Awards
- Most recently, he collaborated with Self-Portrait on a residency collection in 2024
Kane is particularly known for his "More Joy" slogan, which first appeared in his autumn/winter 2018 collection and was inspired by the 1972 erotic manual The Joy of Sex. His creative inspirations range from Frankenstein and The Planet of the Apes to nature and fetish culture, with his spring/summer 2011 collection famously citing "Princess Margaret on acid" as a guiding concept.
Mulberry's Heritage and Recent Challenges
Founded in Somerset in 1971 as a leather goods company, Mulberry has built its reputation on iconic handbags, particularly the Alexa cross-body satchel designed for Alexa Chung in 2010 and the Bayswater bag carried by celebrities including Kate Moss, Sienna Miller, and Jennifer Lopez.
The brand has faced significant challenges in recent years, including:
- Global workforce reductions affecting approximately 85 employees in 2024
- A resisted takeover bid from billionaire Mike Ashley's Frasers Group
- The departure of previous creative director Johnny Coca in 2020 after five years
Previous creative directors have included Emma Hill and Stuart Vevers, the latter now in his 13th year at American brand Coach.
Industry Response and Future Prospects
The fashion industry's response to Kane's appointment has been overwhelmingly positive. Vogue reported that "the shout of glee at the news that Christopher Kane is the new creative director at Mulberry was practically audible across London this morning."
Andrea Baldo, Mulberry's chief executive, expressed confidence in the appointment, stating: "Christopher brings a rare combination of creativity, intellectual rigour and instinctive playfulness, alongside a deep respect for craft and materials. His vision resonates strongly with Mulberry's heritage and the spirit of British creativity that defines the house."
This partnership comes at a critical time for both Kane and Mulberry, with the fashion world eagerly anticipating how the designer's distinctive aesthetic will reinterpret the heritage brand's identity while addressing the challenges facing independent British designers in the post-pandemic landscape.
