One of television's most heartbreaking deaths has occurred as Hollyoaks legend Diane Hutchinson, played by Alex Fletcher, passed away in emotional scenes aired on Wednesday, May 13. The episode, available on Channel 4 streaming and airing on E4 at 7pm, marked the end of an era for the long-running soap.
A 16-Year Journey Ends
Diane, landlady of the Dog in the Pond pub and soulmate of original character Tony Hutchinson (Nick Pickard), has been a staple of the Channel 4 soap for nearly two decades. Making her debut 16 years ago, she became a pivotal character, helming storylines from her whirlwind romance with Tony to her battle with OCD and survival of a crossbow attack. Her affair with her husband's abusive father showcased Fletcher's powerhouse performances.
Cancer Diagnosis and Final Months
Earlier this year, it was confirmed that Fletcher would step back from the role. Diane was subsequently diagnosed with terminal ovarian cancer. Tony was devastated but resolved to make the most of their remaining time together. Diane attempted chemotherapy but, after a reaction to the drugs, chose to stop treatment to preserve her quality of life.
In emotional scenes last month, Diane confided in friend Nancy Osborne (Jessica Fox) that she had only weeks left. Her final scenes arrived as she and Tony prepared to attend the wedding of Ste Hay (Kieron Richardson) and Rex Gallagher (Jonny Labey), which had been brought forward due to her diagnosis.
Final Moments
Before the wedding, Diane worried about her son Ro (Leo Cole), who had developed feelings for Rex. Despite drama, the ceremony went ahead. Tony and Diane shared a special dance as attendees watched with teary eyes.
In Wednesday's episode, Diane recorded nursery rhymes for her daughter Eva, reflecting on happy memories. After an argument between her children, Diane felt cold and pain. With Tony's help, she said goodnight to her kids. Tony put her to bed, and she thanked him for their dance. She asked him to leave the door open so she could hear her family.
As Tony, Ro, Ant (Brook Debio), and Dee Dee (Chloe Atkinson) sang nursery rhymes, Diane listened with a smile and passed away. Tony returned later to find her gone, breaking down in grief.
Diane has been a beloved character since 2010, and her death marks a significant loss for the soap. Hollyoaks airs weekdays on E4 at 7pm and is available on Channel 4 streaming.
