A Family of Marys: Mum Explains Naming All Four Daughters Mary
Mum Names All Four Daughters Mary, Explains Why

In a heartwarming tale of familial devotion, a mother from California has shared the story behind naming all four of her daughters Mary, a decision rooted in a cherished family tradition. Mary and Brian Heffernan, upon discovering they were expecting their first child, were determined to continue a lineage where most women in Mary's family share the same first name. This commitment led them to name each of their subsequent daughters Mary as well, creating a unique household of Marys.

Embracing a Legacy of Strong Women

Mary Heffernan, 47, explained that the tradition stems from a long history of strong Catholic women named Mary on both sides of their family. "Once we started, there was no going back," she said. "Brian and I wanted to carry on the tradition with our first daughter... we honestly never thought about the fact we might have ALL girls." The couple, who run a cattle ranch and business named The Five Marys, have faced some scrutiny online for their unconventional choice, but they remain proud and unfazed by outside opinions.

Distinguishing the Daughters with Second Names and Nicknames

To avoid confusion, each daughter goes by either her second name or a nickname, and crucially, they are all named after different relatives in the family tree. This personal touch adds depth to their identities while honouring loved ones.

  • Mary Frances Borchard (Francie): The firstborn is named in tribute to Brian's grandma, Bernice Borchard, who had recently passed away. The name Frances also honours Mary's sister and great-grandad. "We loved the name and decided to call her Francie, honouring strong family members on both sides of our families, and Francie is just that," Mary added.
  • Mary Marjorie (Maisie): The second daughter is named after Mary's grandma (Mary) and great-aunt (Marjorie). Mary notes that Maisie inherited her "sweet and loving personality" from great-aunt Marjorie.
  • Mary Jane (Janie): Their third daughter, named after Mary's paternal grandma, Mary Jane, who died young but was known for her "strong and sassy" personality—a perfect match for Janie.
  • Mary Teresa Katherine (Tessa): The fourth and final daughter, a surprise after hopes for a boy, is named after Mary's Aunt Tere (Teresa), Aunt Kathy, her godmother, and great-aunt Kate. Nicknamed Tiny Tess, it suits her "huge personality."

Pride in a Name That Endures

Despite facing questions and opinions online, Mary stands firm in her decision. She told The Daily Mail: "Our family doesn't need outside approval. The girls love their names, and that's what matters. Mary is a strong name. To me, it represents humility, steadiness and strength. It's a name that has endured for generations, and I love what it stands for as a foundation for our family."

A Historical Perspective on Family Naming Traditions

This practice is not without historical precedent. For centuries, it has been common, particularly among the wealthy, for parents to continue family names, often naming firstborn sons after their fathers to preserve lineage. The Heffernans' story highlights how such traditions can evolve and adapt, blending heritage with individuality through middle names and nicknames.

In an era where unique baby names often trend, the Heffernans' choice underscores the enduring value of family bonds and cultural heritage. Their daughters, each with distinct identities tied to their namesakes, embody a legacy of strength and love that transcends mere nomenclature.
