Socceroos forward Awer Mabil has declared that multiculturalism makes Australia 'the best country in the world', as he reflected on a viral team video that showcases the squad's diverse backgrounds.
Viral Video Reflects Pride in Diversity
Speaking in Oakland ahead of Australia's World Cup clash with the United States, Mabil said the video resonates because it is 'raw' and 'unedited', capturing the players' pride in representing a multicultural Australia.
During the interview with veteran SBS commentator David Basheer, Mabil briefly lost his train of thought, telling Basheer: 'I grew up watching you.' He recalled watching SBS's football highlights as a child and expressed hope that the Socceroos' presence on the world stage would show displaced people everywhere that 'everything is possible'.
A Message of Hope
Mabil, who was born in a Kenyan refugee camp before moving to Australia, emphasised the importance of representation. He said the team's diversity is something Australians can relate to, and he hopes their journey inspires others.
The Socceroos have been vocal about celebrating their migrant roots and addressing anti-immigration sentiment ahead of the World Cup. Mabil's comments underscore the team's commitment to using their platform to promote inclusivity and unity.
As Australia prepares for the 2026 World Cup, Mabil's message resonates strongly: diversity is a strength, and the Socceroos are proud to represent a nation built on multiculturalism.
