TFI Friday Makes a Comeback on Channel 4 After More Than a Decade
Chris Evans' celebrity talk show, TFI Friday, is poised for a dramatic return to Channel 4 later this week, marking its first broadcast on the original network in over ten years. The series, which originally aired from 1996 to 2000 with a brief revival in 2015, has been rebooted as a six-part TV series, following a successful launch on YouTube earlier this year alongside Evans' Virgin Radio programme.
Channel 4 Executives Express Enthusiasm for the Revival
Cimran Shah of Channel 4 praised the show's innovative format, stating, 'TFI Friday was doing stripped-back, personality-led chat long before visualised podcasts were a twinkle in our eyes!' Shah added, 'I'm thrilled that this deal brings TFI back to Channel 4, reimagined in a way that feels fresh, immediate and perfectly suited for a new generation wherever they watch Channel 4.' Dennie Morris, News UK's director of audio for news broadcasting, echoed this sentiment, calling the show 'one of those rare formats that never really left the cultural conversation' and expressing excitement for audiences to rediscover its unique appeal.
Controversial Incidents from the Show's Past Resurface
The return of TFI Friday has reignited discussions about its controversial legacy, particularly a 1999 episode where Chris Evans asked Victoria Beckham to step on a scale shortly after she gave birth. In a 2022 Vogue interview, Beckham reflected on the moment, saying, 'He made me stand on the scales to be weighed. Can you imagine doing that nowadays.' She later described the experience as 'so humiliating' on a podcast in 2025, noting that such actions were considered acceptable at the time.
Other controversies from the original run include:
- A competition that pitted two children in a staring contest, leading to tears and viewer backlash, with both participants later receiving compensatory holidays in 2015.
- An incident where Happy Mondays vocalist Shaun Ryder used explicit language on air, resulting in an onscreen apology and temporary ban, though he returned for a performance that sparked further apologies.
New Series Features Star-Studded Lineup and Future Plans
The first episode of the revived series will showcase a diverse array of guests, including singers Sam Ryder, Jack Savoretti, and Shreya Ghoshal, actors Gemma Arterton and Cush Jumbo, Doctor Who legend Peter Capaldi, and comedian Sindhu Lee. Evans has hinted at long-term plans for the show, teasing in February, 'We've got plenty of road still to run here before we run out of road.' He reflected on the show's longevity, citing examples like Rod Stewart and Paul McCartney appearing on TFI Friday at ages similar to his current 60 years.
TFI Friday is scheduled to launch on Friday, April 17 at 11pm on Channel 4, promising a mix of chaotic interviews, live music, and unpredictability that defined its original run. The revival aims to capture both nostalgia and appeal to a new generation of viewers, despite the shadow of past controversies.
