Nine Finalists Compete for Coveted Strictly Come Dancing Hosting Positions
The search for new hosts of Strictly Come Dancing has narrowed to nine final contenders, with high-stakes auditions scheduled this week to determine who will succeed Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman. The duo announced their departure in December, citing it as the "right time" to leave together after years of co-hosting the beloved BBC show.
Secret Auditions and Chemistry Tests Underway
According to reports, the auditions will take place from Tuesday to Friday at a confidential London location, designed to replicate a live Strictly show complete with judges and a band. Potential presenters, including Rylan Clark, Zoe Ball, and surprise candidates, have signed non-disclosure agreements to maintain secrecy, with even crew members sworn to confidentiality.
An insider revealed, "It’s not just about reading autocue. They’ll be looking at how people work together, and humour is a massive part of it. There’s everything to play for." The process is being overseen by Sarah James, Strictly's executive producer since 2019, and Kalpna Patel-Knight, the BBC’s head of entertainment, with incoming director-general Matt Brittin kept informed.
Contenders in the Spotlight
The final nine candidates bring diverse backgrounds and experience to the table:
- Rylan Clark: A frontrunner with four years hosting It Takes Two, plus extensive live broadcasting on This Morning and BBC Radio 2.
- Emma Willis: Known for shows like Big Brother and The Voice, she is reportedly keen to impress in auditions.
- Tom Allen: A comedian seen as a potential replacement for Claudia’s chaotic energy, with experience on panel shows and hosting gigs.
- Angela Scanlon: A former Strictly contestant, she could align with bosses' preference for two female hosts.
- Alex Jones: A BBC staple from The One Show, with past Strictly experience and fan support.
- Bradley Walsh: Facing a dilemma between Strictly and hosting Gladiators with his son, Barney.
- La Voix: A drag queen and former contestant popular with producers for her on-screen banter.
- Alison Hammond: Initially hesitant, she has now expressed strong interest in the role, leveraging her TV icon status.
- Zoe Ball: A BBC veteran and former Strictly contestant, she has openly declared her desire for the hosting job.
BBC’s Cautious Approach to Selection
Described as "the crown jewel of the BBC," Strictly Come Dancing is being handled with extreme care. Executives are vetting candidates' pasts to avoid potential scandals, reflecting lessons from previous controversies on the show. A TV source explained, "Bosses are taking a very keen interest and refusing to take any chances."
The new hosts are expected to be announced soon, with the show set to return later this year. A Strictly spokesperson stated that plans for the new series will be confirmed "in due course," keeping fans eagerly awaiting the final decision.
