Lucie Rose Defends Marriage to Richard Keys Amid Age Gap Criticism
Lucie Rose, the wife of former Sky Sports presenter Richard Keys, has publicly addressed their marriage for the first time, defending the couple's significant 31-year age difference. Keys, 68, and Rose, 36, married in 2023, seven years after Keys separated from his first wife, Julia, ending a 34-year marriage that produced two children, Jemma and Josh.
Addressing the Age Gap and Social Criticism
The marriage attracted considerable attention and criticism, particularly because Rose was previously friends with Keys' daughter. Many questioned the dynamics of a relationship between someone in their late sixties and someone in their mid-thirties. However, Keys has consistently maintained that he has "never felt" the age gap with his second wife.
"It baffles people, but I don't feel it. I never have," Keys told The Telegraph. "I knew I wanted to be with Lucie, but I couldn't emotionally get there. It took me forever to change course."
Keys credited the relationship's success to Rose's patience and his sister Susan's support. "It was only the result of Lucie's patience, and my sister Susan's belief that she has always known what's right for me. So, it wasn't an overnight thing at all," he explained.
Rose responded to Keys' comments about not feeling the age gap with a lighthearted remark: "That's because you're my adult toddler."
Dismissing Coercion Claims and Addressing Past Controversies
Keys firmly dismissed suggestions that Rose was coerced into the relationship. "What's damaging is that people presume I ran away with my daughter's best mate, locked her in a room, and gave her no choice about whether she wanted to be with me or not," he stated. "All of which is nonsense. Lucie's one of the most powerful, strong-minded individuals you'll come across. She's deeply passionate about women's rights."
The conversation inevitably turned to Keys' controversial departure from Sky Sports in 2011. He and co-presenter Andy Gray were dismissed after making sexist comments about female assistant referee Sian Massey, believing their microphones were off. In leaked audio, Keys made derogatory remarks about women's understanding of football and asked inappropriate questions about a female colleague.
"Prehistoric banter isn't acceptable in the modern world. I accept that," Keys reflected. "We failed to change when the world has changed."
Rose's Perspective on Keys' Evolution
When asked about her husband's past conduct, Rose emphasized the importance of personal growth. "For me, the most important thing is people's ability to change and evolve," she said. "If I had met someone who was trying to justify that culture, there wouldn't have been anywhere for us to go. But that wasn't the person I met."
She described Keys as someone traumatized by the culture he was part of, rather than its sole cause. "I met someone who was traumatised, to an extent, by the culture he lived through. Except somehow he is marked as being the cause of it. I don't think that's fair – it's not who he is."
Current Life and Future Plans
Keys recently returned to the UK after a decade working for sports broadcaster beIN SPORTS in Qatar. Now reunited with Rose, he expressed openness to expanding their family. At 68, Keys said he would be "very open" to the possibility of having another child.
Rose, a partner in private funds at Proskauer Rose, one of New York's largest law firms, brings her own professional accomplishments to the relationship. The couple continues to navigate public scrutiny while building their life together, challenging conventional expectations about age and relationships in the public eye.
