Former Emmerdale star Frazer Hines has delighted fans with a festive greeting, shared via social media more than three decades after his departure from the iconic ITV serial.
A Christmas Greeting from a Soap Legend
The actor, now 81 years old, took to Instagram this week to post a cheerful selfie from a café. Alongside the image, he wrote a simple yet warm message for his followers: 'A merry xmas to all my friends and readers'.
Hines is best remembered for his long-running role as Joseph 'Joe' Sugden, a character he portrayed from 1972 until 1994. Joe was the youngest child of Jacob and Annie Sugden and a central, generally happy figure in the Sugden family for over two decades.
Joe Sugden's Tumultuous Life in the Dales
During his time in the fictional village, Joe Sugden's life was far from quiet. One of his most significant and scandalous storylines involved his relationship with old friend Kathy Gimbel in the 1970s. The affair rocked the community and led to the tragic death of Kathy's father, who took his own life.
Later in the decade, Joe became locked in a bitter feud with farmer Phil Fletcher. In a dramatic confrontation, Fletcher shot himself but attempted to pin the blame on Joe. Years later, Joe spiralled into depression and alcoholism after learning of the death of a man named Mark. He carried immense guilt for having argued with Mark on the night he died.
Concerned for his wellbeing, his brother Jack and sister-in-law Rachel urged him to visit their mother Annie in Spain. Joe left the village, but in 1995, residents received the devastating news that he had been killed in a car accident. His funeral saw the return of Annie and the village's former vicar, Amos Brearly, who made a cryptic comment hinting that Joe's death may not have been an accident.

In 2024, he made a special return to television, reprising his role as Sonny Troughton in the BBC daytime drama Doctors, shortly before the show's final episode was broadcast.
His latest Instagram post serves as a heartwarming reminder of his enduring connection with the audience who followed his journey in the Dales, proving that for soap legends, the bond with fans never truly ends.
