From Emmerdale Village to Electrical Wiring: Sam Hall's New Career Path
James Hooton, who portrays Sam Dingle on the long-running ITV soap Emmerdale, has disclosed that his former on-screen son, actor Sam Hall, has embarked on a completely different professional journey since departing the show. Hall, who played the character Samson Dingle from 2009 until 2024, has become a fully qualified electrician, marking a significant shift away from the acting world.
The Dramatic Exit of Samson Dingle
Samson Dingle's storyline reached a dramatic climax in the summer of 2024. The character found himself in a harrowing situation at The Hide, where he became intoxicated with a friend named Josh. During the altercation, Josh discovered that HOP! employee Matty Barton, portrayed by Ash Palmisciano, is transgender and began aggressively taunting him by using his previous name.
The confrontation escalated when Josh attempted to force Matty to hand over money from the till. In the ensuing struggle, Josh pushed Samson toward Matty, who was holding a knife, resulting in Josh being stabbed. Matty was immediately arrested, while Samson, under threat from Josh to remain silent, lied to the police about the incident.
This deception led to Matty being wrongfully imprisoned for a period, despite his innocence. Overwhelmed by guilt, Samson eventually confessed the truth to authorities, leading to his own sentencing of four years in prison. This outcome forced him to bid farewell to life in the village and his daughter Esther, whom he shares with Amelia Spencer, played by Daisy Campbell.
A New Chapter: From Acting to Electrical Work
In a recent interview with Inside Soap, James Hooton expressed his fondness for his former co-star and revealed the surprising career change. "I'd love Samson to return. Sam Hall, who played him, has become a friend of mine," Hooton stated. He further elaborated, "He's also a qualified electrician, so has done a lot of work for me in my house!"
Hooton also speculated about potential future storylines, suggesting that Samson's return to the village could introduce compelling narratives, particularly as Sam and Lydia Dingle, played by Karen Blick, would discover how much the character has transformed during his time in prison.
Ongoing Drama for the Dingle Family
Despite Samson's absence, the Dingle family continues to face turbulent times. Sam Dingle remains entrenched in the chaotic dynamics typical of the clan. In upcoming episodes, Sam and several other family members will grapple with the emotional news that Cain Dingle, portrayed by Jeff Hordley, has been diagnosed with prostate cancer, adding another layer of drama to the series.
Sam Hall's transition from a beloved soap actor to a skilled electrician highlights the diverse paths performers can take after leaving high-profile roles. His new vocation not only provides a stable career but also maintains his connection to the Emmerdale community through personal relationships with former cast members.
