EastEnders 2026 Cast Shake-Up: Major Returns, Exits, and New Faces Revealed
Following a year of significant cast changes in 2025, EastEnders continues to evolve in 2026 with a dynamic mix of returns, departures, and new arrivals. Last year, viewers welcomed back iconic characters like Zoe Slater (Michelle Ryan) and Max Branning (Jake Wood), alongside high-profile comebacks such as Grant Mitchell (Ross Kemp) and a surprise cameo from Anita Dobson as Angie Watts. The festive season featured memorable appearances from departed legends including Pat and Barry Evans (Pam St Clement and Shaun Williamson), Debbie Bates (Nicola Duffett), and Chrissie Watts (Tracy-Ann Oberman).
In 2026, the drama intensifies with another return for Chrissie and Jake Moon (Joel Beckett), while Grant Mitchell is set for an extended comeback. The year also bids farewell to beloved characters like Felix Baker (Matthew James Morrison), Bernie Taylor (Clair Norris), Junior Knight (Micah Balfour), Freddie Slater (Bobby Brazier), Anna Knight (Molly Rainford), and Anthony Trueman (Nicholas Bailey). This year, audiences will say goodbye to Sam Mitchell (Kim Medcalf) and likely Nigel Bates (Paul Bradley).
New Arrivals: Josh and Sandra
Jasmine Fisher's (Indeyarna Donaldson-Holness) twin brother, Josh, portrayed by Joshua Vaughan, will soon arrive in Walford, accompanied by his adoptive mother, Sandra (Dawn Steele). Sandra's timely arrival coincides with Jasmine's trial, adding tension to the Square. Joshua Vaughan expressed his excitement about joining the cast, stating, "It has been incredibly humbling to join the cast of EastEnders and find myself at the intersection of the iconic Trueman and Slater families. Getting to work alongside such legacy actors is a masterclass, and I’ve learned so much from them. Josh is a big ball of love, and I’m so excited for the audience to see the drama unfold as he arrives onto the Square."
Dawn Steele, known for her role in Holby City, will star as Sandra in a short stint. She shared, "I was thrilled to be asked to play the role of Sandra, who arrives and throws a spanner or two into the Square! It was so great to go back to Elstree after the end of Holby City. Lots of the same crew (and a few cast!) are still there, so it was joyful to see them all again. Everyone was so welcoming, and I really enjoyed learning new ways of filming; it really is a well-oiled machine, and everyone works so hard. But it was Sandra’s storyline and character that really made me want to do it, and I’m sure viewers will be thrilled with another piece of the puzzle ahead of the trial. Sandra’s timing couldn’t be better, or worse…"
The exact arrival date for Josh and Sandra remains unknown, but a recent press release suggests it will be soon.
Cast Returns: Grant Mitchell and Stacey Slater
Grant Mitchell, last seen during EastEnders' 40th birthday celebrations, will return for an extended stint in 2026. Ross Kemp confirmed his comeback, saying, "I’m truly delighted to be stepping back into Grant Mitchell’s shoes and returning to EastEnders later this year. As well as exploring Grant’s attempts to reconnect with his son Mark, it’s especially an honour to be part of Nigel’s powerful ongoing dementia storyline, which holds deep personal meaning for me due to a close family connection in real life." Grant will be involved in his son Mark's storyline with a drug cartel and Nigel's dementia plot.
Ross Kemp is set to return as Grant Mitchell for a short, explosive stint in spring 2026.
Stacey Slater, who left Walford for Brazil to escape memories of ex-husband Martin Fowler (James Bye), will also make a comeback. Actress Lacey Turner reassured fans in a behind-the-scenes video, stating, "I am coming back, I won’t be long." The exact return date for Stacey is currently unknown.
Cast Departures: Sam Mitchell and Nigel Bates
Sam Mitchell's return to Walford will be brief, as she was initially set to leave after her cancer storyline concluded. However, as of mid-February, she has chosen to stay, potentially leading to a reunion with her brother Grant. Her departure date remains unspecified.
Nigel Bates made a surprise return in December after 26 years, supporting Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) through a mental health crisis while dealing with his own young-onset dementia diagnosis. Actor Paul Bradley is back temporarily, but the duration of his stint is unknown. His exit date is also currently undisclosed.
