Dan Walker Skips Tribunal Start Over Bullying Claims, Maintains Optimistic Public Face
Dan Walker Skips Tribunal Start Over Bullying Allegations

Dan Walker Absent as Channel 5 Employment Tribunal Over Bullying Allegations Commences

Dan Walker, the prominent broadcaster, was notably absent from the London Tribunals Centre on Monday as proceedings began in an employment tribunal where he faces serious allegations of racial and sexist discrimination from his former Channel 5 News co-host, Claudia-Liza Vanderpuije. Despite the legal storm brewing, Walker maintained a conspicuously upbeat public demeanor, continuing with his regular weekday breakfast slot on Classic FM and sharing an optimistic Instagram message earlier in the day.

Broadcaster's Public Persona Contrasts With Legal Proceedings

In a selfie posted to his Instagram account, Walker, 49, wished his followers a "good morning" while outlining his schedule: "Exciting day today… @classicfm this morning and then off to the @royalalberthall to present Classic FM Live alongside the brilliant @myleeneklass. Can’t wait but that does mean no @c5news for me tonight. You can still join the guys at 5 on 5 and I will be back on the telly tomorrow. Have a cracking Monday."

Meanwhile, Vanderpuije, 47, arrived at the Tribunals Centre with her lawyer, Jonathan Coade, just before 11am. According to reports from The Mirror, Walker chose to remain at home for the initial day of what is scheduled to be a potentially five-week legal process. Sources indicate that witnesses are only expected to attend in person when specifically called to testify.

Substantial Allegations and Firm Denials

The tribunal was confirmed last week after Vanderpuije filed comprehensive claims including unfair dismissal, discrimination and harassment on grounds of race and sex, and breach of contract. The former co-hosts worked together for approximately one year, from 2022 to 2023, before their professional relationship dissolved.

According to legal documents, not only is Walker named as a respondent, but also ITN (which produces Channel 5 News) and Channel 5's owner, Paramount. When the allegations initially surfaced, an ITN spokesperson categorically denied the claims "in full." Walker himself has consistently denied any wrongdoing and is reportedly supported by over 50 character witness statements from notable figures including famous footballers, Olympians, BBC journalists, and fellow presenters.

Walker's Defense and Previous Investigation

A source close to Walker told the Mail on Sunday: "Dan absolutely denies any sexism, misogyny, racism, or bullying. It has been hanging over him for some years now. He will be at London Central tribunal later this month. Nobody wants this, but he will be there to tell the judge the truth. There will be tonnes of witness statements which will talk to Dan’s character. He has been absolutely stunned with the amount of people willing to support him."

This legal action follows an internal investigation conducted last year by Channel 5 and ITN. In that HR-led probe, allegations against Walker were not upheld, and no misconduct was found. Speaking to The Telegraph in September after being "completely exonerated" in that investigation, Walker reflected: "I haven’t really talked about it, but that was fully investigated, and everything was completely incorrect, and I was entirely vindicated by an independent inquiry. So yeah, that’s not nice, but you hold on to what you know the truth is and ultimately the truth is the important thing."

Contrasting Experiences and Ongoing Professional Commitments

While Walker plans to continue his professional commitments throughout the tribunal process, Vanderpuije's legal team has reported that she has been subjected to "vile social media abuse" since news of the tribunal emerged. Friends of Walker have indicated to The Sun that he intends to maintain his normal work schedule as the hearing progresses.

The former BBC Breakfast host and Strictly Come Dancing contestant acknowledged that waiting for the findings of the initial investigation "wasn’t easy," but stated: "I know I’m not that person, so… And yeah, there’s days you worry about that, but also you know that that’s a picture you don’t recognise, and nobody you’ve ever worked with recognises."

An industry source previously told The Sun that the initial investigation had "sent shockwaves round Channel 5 and ITN," with Walker reportedly "totally stunned to be dragged into it." The current tribunal represents a significant escalation of the dispute, with both parties preparing for what could be an extended legal battle with substantial professional and personal implications.
