Martin Clunes Claims Public Remains Unaware of Full Huw Edwards Scandal Details
Martin Clunes has asserted that the complete narrative surrounding the disgrace of former BBC newsreader Huw Edwards remains largely unknown to the public. The actor made these remarks while promoting his upcoming portrayal of Edwards in Channel 5's dramatic film Power: The Downfall of Huw Edwards.
Drama Reveals Previously Unknown Aspects of Scandal
Clunes, 64, explained that he himself was unaware of the full story before receiving the script for the feature-length production. The drama details the relationship between Edwards and a young man named Ryan, played by Osian Morgan, including the exchange of substantial monetary payments for sexual images.
"I thought it was a challenge. Just the name Huw Edwards is a story. But I didn't know the story until I read it," Clunes revealed during a screening event. The Doc Martin star believes this experience will be shared by viewers when the program airs.
Media Confusion and Public Sympathy Shift
Clunes described the initial media coverage as containing "a lot of fudgery," referencing how the scandal first emerged with vague reports about "a top BBC star" before Edwards was eventually identified by his wife in July 2023. The actor noted there was initial public sympathy for Edwards until the contents of his phone were revealed.
"I think maybe everybody had lost interest by that point, because the next bit of news had come along. Donald Trump had done something," Clunes observed about the shifting media attention.
Legal Consequences and Production Details
Edwards was eventually charged and received a suspended jail sentence for three counts of making indecent images of children, becoming a registered sex offender nearly a year after the initial allegations surfaced.
Clunes discussed the production approach for phone call scenes between Edwards and Ryan, emphasizing that he and Morgan filmed together to create authenticity. "That was the perfect way to get that genuine intimacy of those overlong phone calls you'd have with a young girlfriend or something," he explained.
Portrayal Challenges and Accent Work
The actor addressed the challenge of capturing Edwards' distinctive Welsh accent, describing his approach as "my version of him" rather than a precise imitation. "We watched him every night and he sort of seeps in," Clunes noted about his preparation process.
Power: The Downfall of Huw Edwards premieres tonight at 9pm on Channel 5 and will be available through the My5 streaming service. The drama promises to reveal aspects of the scandal that Clunes believes have remained obscured from public view despite extensive media coverage.
