Two BBC Stars Lead Race to Replace Scott Mills on Radio 2 Breakfast Show
BBC Stars Frontrunners to Replace Scott Mills on Radio 2

Two BBC Veterans Emerge as Frontrunners for Radio 2 Breakfast Show Role

Nearly three weeks have passed since Scott Mills was dismissed from the BBC, and speculation continues to mount over who will succeed him on the Radio 2 Breakfast Show. The 53-year-old presenter was fired in late March following allegations concerning his 'personal conduct,' linked to a historic relationship from over a decade ago. Further details revealed that his termination stemmed from a complaint related to a historic police investigation into serious sexual offences against a boy under 16, reported to have occurred between 1997 and 2000. The case was dropped approximately seven years ago due to insufficient evidence.

Outgoing director general Tim Davie informed BBC staff that new information made it 'very clear' Mills had to be let go. While replacements for his Eurovision Song Contest commentary and a Race Across the World spin-off podcast have been announced, the Radio 2 position remains unfilled. Mills, who took over the Breakfast Show from Zoe Ball just last year, was among the BBC's highest-paid presenters, earning between £315,000 and £319,999 in 2024.

Contenders and Odds in the Running

The BBC has not yet disclosed the successor, but two prominent names have surfaced as frontrunners: Sara Cox and Vernon Kay. Both are seasoned BBC stalwarts, each with odds of 3/1 to secure the Breakfast Show role. Rylan Clark follows closely at 5/1, while Clara Amfo and Gary Davies are tied at 6/1. Other potential candidates include Roman Kemp at 8/1, and Emma Willis and Jordan North each at 10/1.

Ladbrokes' Alex Apati commented, 'Neither are strangers to Radio 2, and the odds suggest it could well be a two-horse race between Vernon Kay and Sara Cox for the Breakfast Show gig.'

Profiles of the Leading Candidates

Sara Cox, 51, has a rich history with the BBC, hosting various Radio 1 shows from 1999 to 2014, including the breakfast show from April 2000 to December 2003. She later transitioned to Radio 2, where she has presented the teatime show since 2019. Following Mills' dismissal, reports indicated she would also take over his Eurovision commentary duties, partnering with Rylan Clark for the semi-finals in Vienna this May.

Vernon Kay, also 51, hosted his own BBC Radio 1 show from 2004 to 2012 and later presented on Radio X between 2015 and 2017. In 2023, he assumed the mid-morning host role on Radio 2, succeeding Ken Bruce, showcasing his versatility and experience within the network.

Dark Horse Candidate and Insider Perspectives

Another name in contention is OJ Borg, currently hosting the Radio 2 weekday overnight show. The 47-year-old presenter, whose full name is Oliver James Borg D’Anastasi, began his career on VH1 in 2005 and has hosted the National Lottery and EuroMillions shows on BBC One. He also produces and hosts cycling and mixed martial arts podcasts for the BBC, joining Radio 2 in 2018.

A source revealed, 'Bosses want to choose someone who’s not the biggest name, but is well-liked at the station. OJ is someone who has proven he can do the job. He ticks all the right boxes and could be the perfect fit – even though he’s not one of the top stars vying for the job, picking him may feel like a surprise choice, but it would be a clean slate for the breakfast show.'

Metro has reached out to the BBC and representatives for Sara Cox, Vernon Kay, and OJ Borg for further comment, but no official announcements have been made. The selection process highlights the BBC's focus on finding a reliable and popular presenter to rejuvenate the Breakfast Show following recent controversies.
