Exclusive Willem Dafoe Film Sculpt to Debut at Dark Mofo 2026 Festival
A highly exclusive experimental film starring acclaimed actor Willem Dafoe and Charlotte Rampling is set to make its Australian premiere at the 2026 Dark Mofo festival in Hobart, Tasmania. The film, titled Sculpt, can only be viewed by one individual at a time, creating an intimate and rare cinematic experience.
Limited Viewings and Secret Locations
French artist Loris Gréaud's film Sculpt has been seen by an estimated 500 people worldwide since its 2016 premiere at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. For Dark Mofo, Gréaud will present a new edit called Sculpt: Eye of the Duck, with only 90 viewing slots available throughout the festival.
Each day, nine timed slots will be offered to hopeful viewers who queue at a downtown Hobart box office. Successful attendees will be transported to a secret, disused facility outside Hobart for their private 50-minute screening. A physical waitlist bench will be available for those who miss out on tickets.
Dark Mofo's Unique Artistic Vision
Festival director Chris Twite emphasized the significance of presenting such an exclusive screen-based work in today's digitally saturated world. "In a world where screens are everywhere and everything's infinitely accessible, there's something to be said about a screen-based work that is almost impossible to see," Twite stated.
The film's inclusion exemplifies Dark Mofo's commitment to offering unique, immersive experiences that challenge conventional art consumption.
Expanding Festival Program and Latin American Focus
Dark Mofo 2026 features an extensive program dominated by Latin American artists, including Spanish choreographer Candela Capitán and Mexican performance artist Kiyo Gutiérrez. Capitán's work SOLAS will feature dancers performing before live webcam streams on Chaturbate, while Gutiérrez will present performances highlighting border violence.
The festival expands its Dark Park art installation onto the Spirit of Tasmania cruise ship, featuring dystopian robot dogs by Lolo & Sosaku and large-scale video art by international artists including Arthur Jafa and Berna Reale.
Music Program and Festival Regulars
The music lineup includes Australian-exclusive performances by New York rapper Princess Nokia, Glaswegian producer Sega Bodega, and Texan trash metal band Power Trip. Australian artists Ninajirachi, Baker Boy, Miss Kaninna, and Folk Bitch Trio will also perform.
Festival regulars returning include the Winter Solstice Nude Swim, Ogoh-ogoh parade, Winter Feast food market, and Night Mass party. Tickets go on sale April 1, with the festival running from June 11-22, 2026.
