Charles Fazzino: The Pop Artist Capturing Super Bowl Excitement in 3D
In his studio in New Rochelle, New York, Charles Fazzino reflects on a career that has transformed pop art into a three-dimensional spectacle. As the official artist for Super Bowl LX, set for 8 February 2026 at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California, Fazzino has carved out a unique niche with his vibrant, playful creations that resonate with sports fans and collectors alike.
From Humble Beginnings to Global Acclaim
After graduating from New York's School of Visual Arts in 1977, Fazzino heeded his father Salvatore's advice to pursue something different to avoid the stereotypical starving artist life. His mother Irene, a sculptor, later inspired him to explore three-dimensional art, leading to a breakthrough at a Greenwich Village art show in 1982. There, he sold all his 3D pieces while his flat artwork remained untouched, signalling the start of a new artistic form.
Fazzino's technique involves layering multiple prints, cutting and gluing by hand to create depth and movement. His works often feature up to 3,000 individual pieces, assembled with the help of a team of apprentice artists. This meticulous process results in tactile, kinetic depictions of subjects ranging from pop culture icons to major sports events.
A Legacy in Sports and Beyond
Beyond the NFL, Fazzino has served as the official artist for Major League Baseball's All-Star Game for over two decades, as well as for the Olympic Games, FIFA World Cup tournaments, and awards ceremonies like the Grammys and Emmys. His collectors include sports legends such as Bernie Williams, Mariano Rivera, and the Manning brothers, alongside celebrities like Madonna and former President Donald Trump.
His art is displayed in prominent locations, including John F. Kennedy International Airport and the 9/11 Memorial and Museum, with pieces sold in 35 countries and on 250 cruise ships worldwide. At 70, Fazzino continues to push boundaries, using unconventional media like baseball bats and football helmets adorned with Swarovski crystals to achieve visual dazzle.
The Super Bowl LX Vision
For Super Bowl LX, Fazzino's official poster will showcase Levi's Stadium and Bay Area landmarks, aiming to capture the excitement and emotion of the event. He plans to weave a common thread through his artwork, making fans feel as if they are part of the experience. The NFL has also commissioned a poster featuring all 60 Super Bowl logos, highlighting Fazzino's role as a pop culture historian.
Leo Kane, retired NFL senior vice-president, praises Fazzino for understanding the connection fans have with their teams, describing his work as visually compelling and classic. Despite his commercial success, Fazzino aspires to more museum exhibitions to cement his legacy, with upcoming shows in Germany and Florida.
Reflecting on his journey, Fazzino expresses gratitude for the honour of being involved with the Super Bowl for 26 years, a testament to his enduring impact on the art and sports worlds.
