Coven, a new LGBTQ+ venue, has opened at the former G-A-Y bar site on Old Compton Street in Soho, nine months after G-A-Y's closure. The club, which opened on Friday, June 19, aims to be inclusive for all members of the LGBTQIA+ community.
Background of G-A-Y closure
G-A-Y was a staple on Old Compton Street for 22 years before owner Jeremy Joseph announced its closure in October 2025, citing changes in the community. Joseph shifted focus to his other venture, Heaven nightclub in Charing Cross.
Coven's vision and opening
Coven is owned by Matthew James Morgan, 32, who told Metro newspaper that the community helped redecorate the club, though painting over G-A-Y's deep purple walls was challenging. Morgan said: "So many people have just committed their energy into making this a great space. I have struggled working out my power tools, but I have some friends who have been so quick to offer to help."
Morgan recalled that G-A-Y was his first clubbing experience at age 19 and praised its longevity. However, he added: "With Coven, we are making it more inclusive, rather than focused on gay men. All are welcome here."
Reactions from the community
DJ and drag queen Jodie Harsh, who debuted at G-A-Y, commented on the change in Soho's scene, saying: "[Soho] lost some of its soul to greed. Coven feels like a new breath of optimism. I’m excited to see how they’ll transform this iconic address into something of a hub that serves queers in 2026, in a scene that’s shifted far away from late night drunken dancing only."
Coven is located at 30 Old Compton Street, Soho.
