The National Portrait Gallery in London has added a portrait of the pop star Charli XCX to its permanent collection. The photograph, taken by renowned fashion photographer Tim Walker, was acquired earlier this year and is now on display in the gallery's Contemporary Portraits section.

The image, captured in 2024, shows Charli XCX wearing a vibrant, custom-made outfit by designer Alexander McQueen. It is the first portrait of the singer to enter the gallery's collection, which includes over 200,000 works spanning from the Tudor period to the present day.

According to a gallery spokesperson, the acquisition reflects Charli XCX's impact on contemporary music and culture. 'Charli XCX has been a defining figure in pop music for over a decade, pushing boundaries and inspiring a generation,' the spokesperson said. 'We are delighted to welcome her portrait into our collection.'
The portrait is part of a broader effort by the gallery to diversify its holdings and include more figures from popular culture. In recent years, the gallery has added portraits of musicians such as Dua Lipa, Stormzy, and Billie Eilish.
Artist and Subject
Tim Walker, known for his whimsical and elaborate style, has photographed numerous celebrities and fashion icons. His portrait of Charli XCX was originally commissioned for British Vogue's September 2024 issue. The singer, whose real name is Charlotte Aitchison, has released five studio albums and is known for hits like 'Boom Clap' and '1999'.

Exhibition and Public Access
The portrait is now on view in Room 38 of the gallery, which is dedicated to contemporary portraits. Admission to the gallery is free, and the portrait will remain on display as part of the permanent collection.
