Sagrada Familia Reaches Maximum Height as Cross Crowns Tower of Jesus Christ
Barcelona's soaring Sagrada Familia basilica has achieved its maximum height, with a crane placing the upper arm of a cross atop the Tower of Jesus Christ on Friday. This monumental event marks a significant milestone for the unfinished church, which already holds the title of the world's tallest church. The central tower now stands at an impressive 566 feet above the city, according to church officials.
Centenary Celebrations Drive Construction Priority
Topping the central tower has been a critical priority in preparation for celebrations this June, which will commemorate the centenary of architect Antoni Gaudi's death. The scaffolding surrounding the central tower is expected to be removed by June, just in time for the inauguration of the Tower of Jesus Christ. This timing underscores the church's dedication to honoring Gaudi's legacy during this pivotal year.
The first stone of the Sagrada Familia was laid in 1882, but Gaudi never anticipated its completion within his lifetime. When he died in 1926 at age 73 after being struck by a tram, only one of its multiple towers had been finished. In recent decades, construction has accelerated as the basilica evolved into a major international tourist attraction, drawing millions of visitors annually who are captivated by Gaudi's radical aesthetic that blends Catholic symbolism with organic forms.
Architectural Details and Future Plans
Inside the Tower of Jesus Christ, work continues, with its exterior still flanked by scaffolding and construction cranes. In alignment with Gaudi's original plans, the cross features four arms, ensuring its shape is recognizable from any direction, as explained by Sagrada Familia's rector, the Rev Josep Turull. If approved by Barcelona's city government, the design also includes plans for a light beam to shine from each arm, symbolizing the church's role as a spiritual lighthouse.
At the base of the newly installed cross, a prayer verse from the Gloria recited by Catholics during mass is inscribed, reading: "You alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High." This addition highlights the religious significance embedded in Gaudi's vision.
Historical Context and Global Significance
The Sagrada Familia surpassed Germany's Ulmer Munster, a Gothic Lutheran church standing at 530 feet, last October to become the world's tallest church. The Ulmer Munster was constructed over 500 years starting in 1377, making the Sagrada Familia's achievement even more remarkable given its ongoing construction timeline.
Entrance fees from the millions of tourists who visit each year largely fund the ongoing construction, allowing the project to progress steadily. This year, the Sagrada Familia will host several events to celebrate Gaudi's legacy, which includes other beautiful buildings in Barcelona and across Spain, showcasing his enduring impact on architecture and culture.
