UK and Japan are poised to finalize an investment package worth £18 billion, which is expected to generate tens of thousands of employment opportunities. Prime Minister Keir Starmer will host Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi at Downing Street on Sunday, ahead of the upcoming G7 summit.
Key Agreements
More than ten commercial and government agreements are anticipated to be signed, including a substantial £9 billion offshore wind project. Additionally, Rolls-Royce will strengthen its partnership with Japan's Atomic Energy Agency through a new agreement focused on developing next-generation technologies, according to Downing Street.
Business and Economic Impact
Japanese and British business leaders will convene to discuss future economic growth opportunities. Starmer stated: "These landmark agreements will bring multibillion-pound investment into the UK, creating tens of thousands of new jobs and driving new developments. As G7 economies and close security partners, we are working together with Japan on some of the most innovative technology in the world, harnessing the best of British and Japanese research and industry to deliver growth and security to every corner of the United Kingdom."
Discussions will also cover facilitating access for UK defence firms to Japanese investment, as confirmed by Number 10.
Political Context
This development comes amid turmoil for Starmer's leadership, following the unexpected resignation of Defence Secretary John Healey over a dispute regarding long-term military funding. Healey was joined by Armed Forces Minister Al Carns and two parliamentary aides in leaving the government, increasing pressure on the prime minister, who already faces the threat of a leadership challenge.
