Starfield Officially Lands on PlayStation 5 with New Content
Bethesda has officially confirmed the release date for Starfield on PlayStation 5, set for April 7, 2026. This announcement comes alongside details of new story DLC and a significant free update, marking a pivotal moment for the sci-fi epic that was once a controversial Xbox exclusive.
From Xbox Exclusive to Multi-Platform Release
In 2023, Bethesda's decision to make Starfield an Xbox exclusive sparked outrage among PlayStation 5 owners, as they were barred from accessing the highly anticipated game. Microsoft admitted that acquiring Bethesda was partly to prevent Starfield from becoming a PlayStation 5 exclusive, yet the game ultimately had minimal impact on Xbox console sales. The irony is now palpable as Starfield prepares to debut on PlayStation 5, ending months of speculation and rumors.
Free Update and Paid DLC Details
Coinciding with the PlayStation 5 release, Bethesda is rolling out two major updates. The first, a free update called Free Lanes, is described as the most expansive free update yet. It introduces new features such as a cruise mode for seamless spaceship travel between planets and the ability to start a New Game+ without losing items. Additionally, a smaller free update, the Trackers Alliance bounty series, adds five bounty targets, though accessing it requires a convoluted process detailed in a Bethesda blog post.
The second update is the paid story DLC, Terran Armada, which follows the 2024 Shattered Space expansion. This DLC tasks players with confronting the titular organization as it threatens war, and includes new content like an Incursion system for loot, additional ship parts, and a robot companion. Priced at $9.99 (approximately £7.50), it is notably cheaper than Shattered Space's £17.99 tag.
Pricing and Availability
For PlayStation 5 users, the standard edition of Starfield will cost £44.99, while the premium edition, which includes both story DLC expansions and extra content, is priced at £60.99. Bethesda has not yet provided UK pricing for the Terran Armada expansion as a separate purchase, but the $9.99 US price suggests affordability. Notably, there was no mention of the upcoming DLSS 5 support announced by Nvidia, which is scheduled for release in autumn 2026, despite some fan criticism over its visual impact on games like Starfield.
Community and Future Prospects
This multi-platform move aims to address some of the flaws in the original game, which the Shattered Space expansion did not fully resolve. With these updates, Bethesda hopes to reinvigorate the Starfield community and attract new players on PlayStation 5. The release underscores a shift in gaming exclusivity strategies, highlighting how major titles can evolve to reach broader audiences.
