The BBC has confirmed that The Cleaner, the hit comedy series starring Taskmaster legend Greg Davies, will return for a one-off Christmas special this festive season. The show follows Wicky, a dutiful but slightly eccentric crime scene cleaner, and has been praised as one of the best TV series in recent years.
Christmas Special Plot Details
The upcoming special sees Wicky reluctantly join his girlfriend Ruth (Zita Sattar) and their friends Andrew and Andrea (Robert Webb and Tori Allen-Martin) on a hiking holiday in the Italian Dolomites. After an accident forces Wicky to spend the rest of his vacation in a hotel, his paranoia grows, and he begins to suspect the hotel manager (Peter Serafinowicz) is up to no good.
Greg Davies commented in a press release: 'I think Wicky has got to the stage in life where he only likes three things: his job, going to the pub and beer. To get the opportunity to force him to go to Italy on a hiking holiday is the perfect opportunity to test his breaking point. I can't wait to show everyone how horribly wrong a holiday can go…'
Success and Fanbase
The Cleaner was the second biggest new BBC comedy series in 2021 and has attracted a dedicated fanbase. One IMDb review by yvettelangbridge described it as 'one of the best TV series this year, it made us laugh, not much has done that this last year!! It was well written, very well cast, poignant, and yet funny.'
Davies had previously hinted to Metro that the show wasn't finished, stating: 'I can tell you that at the moment, The Cleaner isn't finished. That's all I'm allowed to say.'
Inbetweeners Return Rumours
Davies is also linked to persistent rumours that The Inbetweeners might return, with original cast members Simon Bird, James Buckley, Joe Thomas, Blake Harrison, and creators Iain Morris and Damon Beesley reportedly involved. When asked, Davies said: 'All I know is that it's not without foundation that talks are afoot. That's all I know at the moment.' He made clear his desire to participate, joking: 'If I end up not being in that movie, there are people I won't name who I will spend the rest of my life taking down, and the awful vengeance I will reap on those people.'
