A Classic Rides Again: Red Dead Redemption Hits Modern Platforms

In a move that has softened the blow of Grand Theft Auto VI's recent delay, Rockstar Games has officially announced that the beloved western, Red Dead Redemption, is galloping onto a host of modern platforms. The game, alongside its Undead Nightmare expansion, is scheduled for release on December 2, 2025.

The list of supported systems is extensive, confirming the title's arrival on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, iOS, Android, and even Netflix. This widespread release ensures that players across all major gaming ecosystems can experience the epic tale of John Marston.

Enhanced Performance and Free Upgrades

While not a full remaster, this new version of Red Dead Redemption brings a suite of technical improvements tailored to each platform. On PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, players can expect silky-smooth 60fps gameplay, improved image quality, HDR support, and resolutions up to 4K.

The Nintendo Switch 2 version is particularly impressive, also targeting 60fps and supporting NVIDIA's DLSS technology, HDR, and even mouse controls for a versatile play experience.

In a welcome gesture for existing fans, Rockstar is offering a free digital upgrade to players who already own Red Dead Redemption on PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, or the digital backwards compatible version on Xbox One. Furthermore, your save progress will carry over on PlayStation and Switch platforms. Subscribers to GTA+ and PlayStation Plus Extra will also get access to the console versions at no additional cost.

What About Red Dead Redemption 2?

With the original game getting a fresh coat of paint, many fans are eagerly awaiting news on a next-generation version of its critically acclaimed sequel, Red Dead Redemption 2. Following the port announcement, reliable industry insider NateTheHate moved quickly to reassure the community.

He explicitly stated on X, 'This doesn’t negate RDR2 happening,' confirming that plans for an updated version of the sequel are still active. He elaborated that his original information, from the start of 2025, suggested a release a few months after the Switch 2's launch. However, he noted that the subsequent delay of GTA VI means Rockstar's release timelines are always subject to change.

With Grand Theft Auto VI now pushed back to November 19, 2026, Rockstar has a significant window to develop and release the enhanced Red Dead Redemption 2 port. No official price has been set for the new Red Dead Redemption, but it is expected to be similar to its current £39.99 price tag on the Nintendo Switch.
