PS6 Handheld Rumored to Outperform Xbox Series S in Graphics Power
According to a prominent gaming insider, Sony's rumored PlayStation 6 handheld device may feature specifications that surpass Microsoft's Xbox Series S console. The claims, made by leaker KeplerL2 on the NeoGaf forum, suggest the portable gaming system could deliver superior graphical performance while also outpacing the anticipated Nintendo Switch 2.
Technical Specifications and Performance Comparisons
The insider, who has established credibility through previous hardware leaks, asserts that the PS6 handheld's GPU will be "a bit ahead" of the Xbox Series S in raster graphics performance. More significantly, KeplerL2 claims the device will be "massively ahead" in ray tracing and path tracing capabilities, technologies that enhance lighting and visual realism in games.
When compared to Nintendo's upcoming Switch 2, the insider suggests Sony's handheld will deliver superior image quality through PSSR 3 (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution), the next iteration of Sony's AI-driven upscaling technology. "Switch 2 only has DLSS 2 and some games even use the worse 'DLSS Lite'," KeplerL2 noted, adding that "FSR5/PSSR3 will be better [image quality] than even current DLSS 4.5."
Hardware Details and Design Considerations
Previous leaks from last year indicated the handheld might incorporate four Zen 6c cores and 12-20 RDNA 5 compute units operating at 1.6-2GHz frequencies. While Sony has not officially confirmed the existence of a PS6 handheld, growing evidence suggests the company is developing both a traditional home console and a companion portable device.
The exact nature of this handheld remains uncertain. Industry observers speculate it could be a standalone device similar to the PS Vita, a remote player like the PlayStation Portal, or potentially a hybrid system. Rumors suggest it may be dockable and capable of running PlayStation 5 games at reduced resolutions, possibly through a new power-saving mode.
Market Context and Launch Considerations
These performance claims align with expectations if the handheld aims to run PS5 games, but they suggest a significant advancement over Nintendo's Switch 2. However, in the current economic climate, pricing may prove to be the decisive factor for consumers. Sony recently announced a £90 price increase across all PlayStation 5 consoles, effective from April 2, 2026.
Despite this price adjustment, the same insider believes the most affordable PlayStation 6 model might not be as expensive as anticipated. The PlayStation 6 is expected to launch in 2027, though rumors suggest a potential delay until 2028. A key question remains whether Sony will release the handheld simultaneously with the home console or postpone it due to ongoing memory shortages in the technology sector.
The gaming community continues to monitor these developments closely, as Sony maintains official silence regarding its PlayStation 5 successor. The potential emergence of a high-performance handheld could significantly reshape the portable gaming market and create new competitive dynamics with both Microsoft and Nintendo.
