FromSoftware Blocks Multiple Bloodborne Remake Pitches, Including Bluepoint's
FromSoftware Rejects Bloodborne Remakes, Sony Respects Wishes

FromSoftware's Stance Halts Bloodborne Revival Efforts

Despite owning the intellectual property outright, Sony appears unwilling to greenlight any Bloodborne remake or spin-off project without explicit approval from FromSoftware president Hidetaka Miyazaki. This surprising corporate deference has resulted in multiple rejected pitches from various development studios, including the now-shuttered Bluepoint Games.

Bluepoint's Failed Bloodborne Proposal

According to Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier, Bluepoint Games pitched a Bloodborne remake to Sony early last year. While Sony reportedly expressed interest in the project, FromSoftware's leadership rejected the proposal. This rejection occurred despite Miyazaki having previously indicated openness to potential remakes or PC ports of the beloved PlayStation 4 exclusive.

Bluepoint's closure adds particular poignancy to this revelation. The studio, acquired by Sony in 2021, never released a single game during its tenure as a PlayStation subsidiary. After being moved from its traditional remaster and remake work to a now-canceled God of War live service project, Bluepoint ultimately shuttered without returning to what many considered its core competency.

Multiple Studios Have Been Rejected

Brandon Sheffield, director of indie studio Necrosoft Games, confirmed this pattern extends beyond Bluepoint. 'I could find you 10 companies that have pitched a Bloodborne sequel, spin-off, or remake, including my own,' Sheffield wrote on Bluesky. 'It's just not going to happen unless FromSoft decides they want to do it.'

This aligns with comments from former PlayStation president Shuhei Yoshida, who suggested last year that Miyazaki's personal attachment to Bloodborne creates a unique situation. 'Miyazaki-san really really loved Bloodborne,' Yoshida explained during a Kinda Funny interview. 'So I think he is interested but he's so successful and so busy so he can not do it himself but he doesn't want anyone else to touch it... and the PlayStation team respects his wish.'

Fans Remain Frustrated

The continued absence of any Bloodborne enhancement remains a persistent frustration within the gaming community. The game has never received:

  • A PlayStation 5 performance patch
  • An official PC port
  • Even a basic remastered edition

Last year, Sony took down an unofficial fan-made 60 frames per second patch, sparking speculation about an official update that never materialized. Many fans argue that even minimal enhancements would generate significant goodwill, given the game's enduring popularity nearly a decade after its original release.

Bluepoint's Alternative Pitches

With the Bloodborne remake rejected, Bluepoint reportedly proposed two alternative projects before its closure:

  1. A PlayStation 5 update of its acclaimed Shadow of the Colossus remake
  2. A Ghost of Tsushima spin-off title

These suggestions seemed surprisingly conservative for a studio that had previously expressed ambitions to create original intellectual property rather than continue with remasters and remakes. The contrast between these modest proposals and the studio's stated creative aspirations highlights the challenging position Bluepoint found itself in during its final years.

The ongoing situation illustrates the complex relationships between intellectual property owners, original creators, and development studios in the modern gaming industry. While Sony technically possesses full rights to commission Bloodborne projects, the company's apparent unwillingness to proceed without FromSoftware's blessing demonstrates how creative relationships and respect for original vision can sometimes override straightforward business considerations.
