Alibaba.com: AI Drives 100% Surge in B2B Search, Reshaping SMEs
AI Reshapes B2B Sales and Entrepreneurship

AI Ushers in a New Era for B2B Commerce

Artificial intelligence is spearheading a fundamental transformation in global business-to-business trade, according to the latest insights from Alibaba.com. The e-commerce giant, which connects manufacturers and wholesalers with international buyers, asserts that the most profound impact of AI will be felt not by end consumers, but within the B2B sales ecosystem itself.

The Multimodal Search Revolution

Speaking at the CoCreate Europe event, Alibaba.com president Kuo Zhang revealed that multimodal AI search, which utilises multiple data points simultaneously, is driving what he described as a “paradigm shift” in worldwide e-commerce. “We’re completely redesigning what search is… for this year alone, our multimodal search increased 100 per cent,” Zhang stated. This dramatic growth has prompted the platform to launch a dedicated ‘AI mode’, a new feature that integrates agentic AI capabilities directly into the core user experience.

Zhang emphasised that AI is no longer a peripheral tool but is “evolving into the operating system of our platform.” This represents a significant strategic pivot for a company that began as a B2B yellow pages directory and now processes over three million orders annually.

Levelling the Playing Field for Small Businesses

While large corporations have long harnessed advanced technology, Alibaba.com is betting that AI offers unparalleled value to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and solo entrepreneurs who lack extensive funding, time, or specialised expertise. The platform is positioning itself as a crucial ally for these smaller players. A company representative, Vuong, explained, “We are helping the small guys… to achieve their dreams. [AI search] helps you to drive the business much faster… you can make a decision very fast.”

This focus on empowering smaller businesses is particularly relevant during what is acknowledged as a “challenging economic time.” The ability to access sophisticated technology instantly is a game-changer. Entrepreneur and Dragon’s Den star Sara Davies, whose first product launched in 2005, confirms this benefit. “You can use AI tools to support you with… suppliers, customer resource research… it’s going to revolutionise every area of business,” she says, noting it makes bringing a product to market significantly more achievable.

A Word of Caution Amid the AI Boom

Despite the clear advantages, Sara Davies, with over two decades of industry experience, offers a crucial warning to new entrepreneurs. She cautions against over-reliance on the technology, stating, “Never let it allow you to get lazy. I see so many people use AI in lieu of doing the work themselves… customers can smell that inauthenticity a mile off.”

Alibaba.com’s journey reflects a consistent pattern of technological adaptation. As Vuong notes, “Every three or four years, we see kind of a great technology evolving… When the right technology comes, we just apply that technology to solve the real problems.” Their current “defining strategic bet on Agentic AI” marks the latest chapter in this ongoing evolution, fundamentally reshaping how B2B sales are conducted and levelling the global commercial playing field.
