In a stunning automotive revival, Dutch company Autoforma has introduced the Norrsken, a meticulously reimagined and modernized version of the classic Volvo P1800ES shooting brake. This ambitious project emerges from a collaboration between Autoforma, a new division of Niels van Roij Design, and fellow Netherlands-based firm Volvo Lotte, aiming to blend heritage with contemporary performance.
Meet the Autoforma Norrsken
Named after the Swedish term for the Aurora Borealis, the Norrsken promises to deliver clarity, calm intensity, and beauty born from restraint. Each vehicle will be constructed to the precise specifications of the buyer, with three distinct design themes available to cater to diverse tastes. The restomod not only focuses on aesthetic enhancements but also includes a comprehensive performance overhaul designed to preserve an analogue driving feel while boosting reliability and usability.
Designer Niels van Roij's Vision
Dutch designer Niels van Roij, known for his affinity for shooting brakes, has previously unveiled projects like the coachbuilt Rolls-Royce Corniche 'Henry II' and a Tesla Model S shooting brake. For the Norrsken, Autoforma has subtly refined the Volvo's styling with redesigned bumpers, a new front grille, and optional carbon fibre elements such as a front splitter with integrated LED fog lights and wheelarch extensions. Additional features include an optional rear spoiler above the glass tailgate, a choice of exterior brightwork in chrome, silver, or anthracite, two forged alloy wheel designs, and a practical roof rack for a touch of Scandinavian utility.
Turbocharged Volvo T-5 Power Available
During the design process, customers can select from three tailored themes. The Heritage Heaven option emphasizes period-correct colors and materials, offering subtle updates to the original P1800ES with mechanical improvements focused on reliability rather than extreme performance.
The Modern Marvel specification introduces discreet modernizations, including contemporary LED lighting, upgraded suspension components, increased horsepower, and a more progressive color palette.
For those seeking maximum impact, the Forward Fashionista spec provides bold colors, innovative materials, and a thorough mechanical transformation. This top-tier option features Volvo's legendary turbocharged five-cylinder T-5 engine, enhanced brakes, a quicker steering rack, and a twin-exit exhaust system, delivering a dramatic driving experience.
Only Five Cars Per Year Planned
Following the announcement, Niels van Roij shared his insights, stating, "Norrsken reflects the essence of Scandinavian and Dutch design: restraint, honesty in materials, and beauty through purpose. Every decision serves both heritage and everyday usability." Production will be strictly limited to five vehicles annually, a constraint driven by the extensive customization possibilities. Whether opting for Heritage Heaven, Modern Marvel, or Forward Fashionista, each Norrsken will be uniquely tailored to the owner's preferences.
In its most radical Forward Fashionista configuration, pricing for the Norrsken starts from €300,000 excluding taxes, approximately £261,000, positioning it as a premium offering in the restomod market.
