Rolls-Royce Commemorates a Decade of Black Badge Excellence
Rolls-Royce is celebrating the 10th anniversary of its Black Badge models, which were first unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in 2016. This milestone marks a significant chapter in the brand's history, showcasing a blend of stealthy aesthetics and enhanced performance that has captivated luxury car enthusiasts worldwide.
The Genesis of Black Badge: A Legacy of Innovation
The initial Black Badge treatment was applied to the Rolls-Royce Ghost saloon and Wraith coupe, introducing a darker, more aggressive design language. Shortly after, at the 2016 Goodwood Festival of Speed, these models demonstrated their superior dynamism, with a Wraith Black Badge setting the fastest hillclimb time ever recorded by a Rolls-Royce, outperforming numerous mid-engined sports cars. This public display solidified the Black Badge series as a permanent and influential fixture in the Rolls-Royce lineup.
Historical Roots and Modern Interpretations
The signature Black Badge look, featuring a darkened 'Pantheon' front grille and matching Spirit of Ecstasy figurine, draws inspiration from a nearly century-old tradition. In 1928, J.E. Aldred, a founder of Rolls-Royce of America, commissioned a Rolls-Royce 20 HP Brewster Brougham with black finishes instead of chrome. This concept was revived for the Black Badge range, which has since become a preferred choice for bespoke commissions, such as the unique Black Badge Ghost Gamer, a tribute to classic video games.
Expanding the Black Badge Portfolio
Today, the Black Badge specification is available across multiple models, including the Ghost saloon, Cullinan SUV, and Spectre coupe. Notably, the launch of the Spectre Black Badge was conducted in secrecy for select customers, reflecting high demand for this electric vehicle variant. Compared to the standard Spectre, the Black Badge version boasts a 122hp power increase, delivering 659hp through front and rear axle motors, making it the most powerful production Rolls-Royce to date, with a 0-60mph acceleration time of 4.1 seconds. Drivers can activate full power via the 'Infinity Mode' button on the steering wheel, inspired by historical water-speed records, ensuring immediate maximum output.
Future Prospects and Industry Impact
Due to the range's success, Rolls-Royce plans to expand the Black Badge experience, catering to clients who define luxury on their own terms. Chris Brownridge, chief executive of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, stated, "From the outset, Black Badge was created to welcome a new generation of clients into Rolls-Royce: individuals who express their success unapologetically and with conviction." He added that this approach has made the brand relevant to many who might not have considered it before, with Black Badge setting an aesthetic and experiential benchmark that resonates throughout the luxury sector. Brownridge expressed excitement about driving the further evolution of Black Badge in the coming years.
