World's Fastest Submarine 'Super Sub' Launched at £4.3 Million
Scientists and engineers have unveiled the world's fastest submarine, dubbed the 'underwater supercar,' with a price tag of $5.75 million (£4.3 million). The Super Sub, created by manufacturer U-Boat Worx, boasts a top speed of nine knots (10mph), comparable to a dolphin's pace, and is set to revolutionize underwater exploration for luxury yacht owners.
Advanced Engineering and Performance
The Super Sub can carry three people to depths of 300 meters, with an operational range of up to ten nautical miles. It features advanced manoeuvrability, ascending and descending at angles of up to 45 degrees to navigate complex underwater terrain. Engineers conducted intensive sea trials off Curaçao, north of Venezuela, to validate its performance, safety systems, and handling.
Key innovations include a sonar system that continuously scans the seabed and adjusts the craft's trajectory automatically, along with redundant life-support and control systems. The submersible uses hydrodynamic lift for a smooth, 'flight-like' experience during descent, enhancing stability with its winged profile.
Safety and Luxury Features
Safety is paramount, with the Super Sub equipped with 96 hours of life support, a safety buoy, and Maximum Depth Protection to prevent excessive diving. Inside, a transparent acrylic pressure hull offers panoramic views, with seating arranged to maximize visibility for both pilot and passengers.
Market and Applications
Founded in 2005, U-Boat Worx designed the Super Sub for integration into luxury yacht programmes or as a standalone exploration platform. Its speed allows users to survey larger areas in a single dive, making it ideal for inspecting reefs, underwater cliffs, and wreck sites with precision. Final preparations for delivery to its first owner are underway, with handover expected within weeks.
