Police are investigating a grim discovery after six bodies were found inside a train boxcar in a rural Texas town near the Mexican border. The bodies were discovered on Sunday afternoon by a Union Pacific train worker in a train yard in Laredo, Texas. Laredo Police are leading the investigation, but it remains unclear how the victims died.
Possible Link to Human Smuggling
Authorities have not confirmed whether the victims were migrants, but the discovery echoes a tragic incident in 2022 when 46 people were found dead in the back of a trailer in San Antonio, Texas. In that case, police arrived to find one body on the ground and a partially opened gate to an abandoned tractor-trailer. Body bags were spread across the ground, highlighting the scale of the tragedy. U.S. Homeland Security opened an investigation into an alleged human smuggling event in coordination with local police. The trailer was refrigerated but had no working air conditioning.
San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg described the 2022 incident as a horrific human tragedy, noting that the victims had families who were likely trying to find a better life. South Texas has long been the busiest area for illegal border crossings, with people traveling through vehicles past Border Patrol checkpoints to San Antonio, the closest major city, before dispersing across the United States.
Similar Tragedies in the UK
In 2019, the UK experienced a similar tragedy when 49 people were found dead in a lorry container that crossed the Channel twice in one week. The container visited Belgium three times, stopping in Dunkirk and Calais, both hotspots for migrants attempting to reach the UK. The victims arrived in Purfleet, a port in Essex, where the lorry was driven to an industrial estate. Police arrested the driver, Mo Robinson, from County Armagh, on suspicion of murder.
