Ferrari has officially entered the marine world with the unveiling of its first-ever yacht, the Hypersail, a 100-foot ocean monohull vessel that made its debut during Milan Design Week. This groundbreaking project marks a significant expansion for the Italian supercar manufacturer, extending its renowned engineering and design expertise beyond the automotive realm into the high-performance maritime sector.
A Fusion of Supercar Design and Naval Engineering
The Hypersail is the result of a close collaboration between Ferrari's engineering and design teams, led by Flavio Manzoni, and renowned naval architect Guillaume Verdier. The project aimed to translate Ferrari's signature aerodynamic and structural principles into a seafaring vessel, resulting in a silhouette that draws inspiration from iconic Ferrari models such as the Monza SP1 and SP2. Additionally, elements of the deck design echo the company's Le Mans-winning 499P Hypercar, showcasing a seamless blend of racing heritage and nautical innovation.
Manzoni described the project as a challenging yet rewarding venture that pushed his team into unfamiliar territory. 'Hypersail represented an unexpected opportunity for the Ferrari Design Studio; a challenging objective due to its complexity, which allowed us to extend our creative research into a context different from our usual one,' he stated. 'In reality, the Design Studio is not new to this kind of endeavour. In the past, the experience gained in racing car projects, one of the most technologically advanced sectors, has encouraged exploration into more complex fields, allowing us to test ourselves and expand our expertise.'
Innovative Foiling Technology and Renewable Energy
Mechanical engineer Matteo Lanzavecchia highlighted that the Hypersail's performance is underpinned by advanced foiling technology and renewable energy systems. 'Hypersail is a vessel unique in scale and technology, engineered to deliver peak performance within an environment as singular and unpredictable as the ocean,' he explained. 'This is achieved through its core concept: foiling, made possible by a sophisticated control system, leveraging the expertise gained from our automotive developments, and powered by energy recovered from renewable sources such as wind, solar, and motion.'
The yacht features solar panels integrated into the deck and hull, designed to maximize energy capture during voyages while remaining durable enough for crew movement. This sustainable approach ensures that the Hypersail can harness natural resources to enhance its efficiency and reduce its environmental footprint.
Distinctive Livery and Public Exhibition
The Hypersail's livery features Giallo Fly, a vivid yellow historically associated with Ferrari and first seen on the 275 GTB, paired with a new carbon fibre tone known as Grigio Hypersail. Designers say the combination reflects both heritage and performance, with the yellow highlighting key structural elements. The yacht has been on display to the public at Ferrari's flagship store in Milan, alongside a lighthouse-inspired installation overlooking Piazza del Duomo, allowing visitors to experience the vessel up close.
