Aldi Confirms Major London Expansion with Six New Stores by 2026

The German discount supermarket chain Aldi has officially announced plans to open six new stores across London before the end of 2026. This strategic expansion is part of a substantial £40 million investment aimed at addressing the lack of affordable grocery options in various parts of the capital. Aldi has specifically targeted locations where residents currently have limited access to discount retailers, aiming to bring its competitive pricing to more households.

Confirmed Locations for New Aldi Stores

The earmarked sites for the new Aldi branches include several key areas across Greater London. In Zone 1, a new store at Marble Arch has been confirmed, marking a significant addition to the central London retail landscape. Other confirmed locations are Twickenham Road in Hanworth, Orpington West in Bromley, and Willesden High Road in Brent. Additionally, stores are planned for Hoxton in Hackney and Stepney Green in Tower Hamlets, further extending Aldi's footprint in diverse neighborhoods.

Job Creation and Investment Details

This expansion is set to create approximately 200 new jobs across London, providing employment opportunities in retail and related sectors. Jonathan Neale, the managing director of national real estate at Aldi UK, emphasized the company's commitment to supporting Londoners during ongoing economic pressures. He stated, "We know household budgets are still under pressure, and too many Londoners don’t have an Aldi within easy reach. These new stores will bring our unbeatable value to more families while creating around 200 new jobs across the capital."

Wage Increases and Broader UK Expansion

In related news, Aldi recently announced wage increases for its shop floor workers, effective from March 1. Store Assistants nationwide will see their pay rise to £13.35 per hour, while those working within the M25 will receive a minimum of £14.71 per hour, increasing to £15.03 with length of service. This move aligns with Aldi's broader investment strategy, which includes a £370 million programme to open 40 new stores across the UK. More than a dozen of these are slated for London, with previously announced locations such as Chiswick, Notting Hill, Kensington, Hackney Central, and Lewisham.

Additional Developments and Refurbishments

Beyond the new openings, Aldi is also focusing on enhancing its existing presence in London. Stores in Enfield and Kilburn are scheduled for refurbishment later this year to improve customer experience. Furthermore, the chain is expanding beyond London with new branches planned in Watford and Epsom. In a notable property acquisition, Aldi has reportedly signed a mortgage agreement to take over a former psychiatric hospital site in Walthamstow, acquired from the North East London NHS Foundation Trust, indicating potential for future store developments in that area.

This expansion underscores Aldi's aggressive growth strategy in the competitive UK supermarket sector, particularly in London where demand for value-oriented shopping options remains high. By targeting underserved areas and investing in both new stores and employee wages, Aldi aims to strengthen its market position and better serve the diverse communities of the capital.
