Former Tube Trains Become Rooftop Bar in Shoreditch

Two former Tube trains are being transformed into a unique rooftop bar in East London this summer. The iconic train carriages, perched atop Village Underground near Shoreditch High Street Overground station, have long been a local landmark and a popular photo opportunity. Until now, the public has never been able to access this quirky spot — but that is about to change.

Rooftop Bar Opening This July

Starting July 3, pub-goers will finally be granted access to the Village Underground rooftop, including the two train carriages. The newly opened rooftop bar offers stunning panoramic views over East London and promises to be a popular destination during any heatwave. Named the Village Underground Rooftop, the space has previously been used only as overspill offices for venue staff. It will now be open Wednesday through Sunday each week.

Food and Drink Offerings

In addition to drinks, Bad Boy Pizza Society will set up shop on the rooftop, serving gooey 12-inch New York-style slices to visitors. The combination of cold beverages and hot pizza is expected to attract crowds looking for a unique summer experience.

History of the Train Carriages

The carriages originally served on the Jubilee line before being hoisted atop the building in 2006. Since then, they have become an iconic part of London's skyline. The venue's connection to transport goes even further: beneath the rooftop lies a Victorian warehouse that originally served as a storeroom for coal used to power the railways. Over time, this space was renovated and converted into the downstairs venue, which now hosts gigs and club nights.

Founder's Vision

Auro Foxcroft, founder of Village Underground, expressed excitement about the opening: 'For nearly 20 years, we've had this suntrap spot on the Shoreditch skyline to ourselves, so it's exciting to finally be able to share it with our audiences and the local community. The train carriages have been part of how we've used the space day to day — from working to interviewing artists — and this feels like the natural next step, opening them up and making them part of the space for everyone to enjoy.'

Other London Rooftop Spots

For those seeking a dip in the pool alongside stunning views, the five-star hotel art'otel offers a fabulous infinity pool on its roof, set against the dramatic backdrop of Battersea Power Station. The rooftop also provides panoramic 360-degree views across London, making it a perfect spot for swimming in the sunshine while enjoying spectacular sights.
