Fiji Cruise Ship Grounded on Reef Near Iconic Cast Away Island, Sparking Environmental Concerns

The Blue Lagoon Cruises vessel Fiji Princess has run aground at a reef near the uninhabited Monuriki Island in Fiji, a location renowned as the filming site for the 2000 Tom Hanks film Cast Away. The incident occurred on Saturday, prompting immediate evacuation efforts and raising fears of a potential oil spill in the pristine marine environment.

Evacuation and Initial Damage Assessment

According to the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (Msaf), all 30 passengers and 17 of the 31 crew members were safely evacuated from the ship on the same day, with no injuries reported. The remaining crew are assisting with salvage operations and have been relocated to the sister ship Cougar for safety. Initial inspections by Msaf officers revealed significant damage to the vessel, including serious harm to the rear left side where the steering equipment is housed, as well as underwater structural damage.

The ship experienced engine failure and was taking in water following the grounding. Due to rough seas and strong waves, underwater inspections were initially deemed unsafe, complicating early response efforts.

Environmental Risks and Salvage Efforts

A primary concern for authorities is the risk of pollution, as the Fiji Princess was carrying approximately 20,000 litres of diesel fuel. An Msaf spokesperson emphasized that while there were no immediate signs of fuel tank damage, oil spill equipment has been deployed to the area as a precaution. However, adverse sea conditions have hindered its use.

Salvage teams, with assistance from an Australian specialist, are currently working to remove the fuel and oil from the vessel. Once weather conditions improve, further operations will focus on safely recovering the ship. Msaf has stated that their main priorities are ensuring the safety of all personnel, protecting Fiji's marine environment, and maintaining safe response efforts.

Background on Monuriki Island and Cruise Operations

Monuriki Island, located about 45 kilometers west of Nadi, is part of the Mamanuca Island chain and gained fame as the filming location for Cast Away. It has also been used for the US version of the reality show Survivor since 2016. Blue Lagoon Cruises markets the Fiji Princess as a small vessel capable of getting close to shore, even tying off to coconut trees for beach access.

The evacuated passengers and crew have been transported back to Port Denarau. Msaf continues to collaborate with the vessel operator and response teams, promising further updates as the situation develops.
