Cruising the English Channel: Discovering the UK's Caribbean and More
English Channel Cruise: UK's Caribbean and Hidden Gems

Rarely do travellers have the chance to enjoy multiple bucket-list experiences in a single journey, but on a recent cruise titled Gems of the English Channel, I managed to tick off several without the hassle of separate trips. This adventure, perfect for the over-50s crowd, proved that age is no barrier to fun and discovery, as I explored stunning destinations and indulged in onboard luxuries.

Setting Sail with Ambassador Cruise Line

Embarking from Tilbury in Essex, just an hour's drive from my home, I joined Ambassador Cruise Line's Ambience, a ship with a capacity for 1,400 passengers. Launched four years ago, this cruise line specialises in no-fly sailings from various UK ports, offering a more intimate and less crowded experience compared to larger mega-ships. From the moment I stepped aboard, I felt pampered, with friendly staff like waiter Noor greeting me with a warm "Good evening Miss Ruth. House Bubbles?" each night.

Onboard Indulgences and Dining Delights

The culinary offerings on board were exceptional, starting with a special steak and lobster dinner on the first night, served by food waiter Adie. For more casual meals, Borough Market provided a buffet-style array of options, from fish and chips to vegan dishes. I also savoured the luxury of the upmarket Sea and Grass restaurant, where a seven-course tasting menu was a highlight, albeit very filling. The Expedition Drinks Package added to the relaxation, eliminating worries about a final bill.

Evenings were spent in lounges or bars, often ending with professional theatre shows or quizzes. On formal nights, I had the pleasure of dining with Captain Hugh Maynard, adding a touch of elegance to the experience. For relaxation, I enjoyed a refreshing swim in the seawater pool and an excellent Indian head massage by Yuni from Bali at the spa.

Exploring Ports of Call: From Cornwall to France

The cruise itinerary was packed with diverse destinations, each offering unique charms and activities.

Fowey and The Lost Gardens of Heligan

Our first stop was Fowey in Cornwall, where we used a tender—one of the ship's lifeboats—to reach shore. The journey was filled with laughter as we boarded the bobbing boat, passing author Daphne du Maurier's former home in this picturesque town. A short drive away, The Lost Gardens of Heligan captivated me with its giant ferns, palm trees, and exotic plants spread across 200 acres. Restored from disrepair since 1990, this subtropical garden felt truly magical.

The Isles of Scilly: Britain's Caribbean

Next, we visited the Isles of Scilly, my favourite stop of the trip. Arriving in misty conditions, the uninhabited outer islands looked mysterious and enchanting. Anchoring off St Mary's, I joined a wildlife safari with the St Mary's Boatmen's Association, spotting Atlantic Grey seals and adorable puffins diving into the sea. The white sandy beaches and turquoise waters here rival the Caribbean, making it a destination I plan to return to.

Guernsey and St Peter Port

In the Channel Islands, we docked at St Peter Port, Guernsey's capital. After a tender transfer, I explored the cobbled streets for VAT-free shopping and café culture. Other passengers opted for tours of the island's wartime history or visits to Victor Hugo's home, Hauteville House. For a fun overview, the Le Petit Train offered a 45-minute tour of the town.

Honfleur in Normandy

Our final port was Honfleur in northern France, a stunning medieval town founded in the 11th century. While excursions to Monet's gardens or the D-Day beaches were popular, I chose a leisurely stroll around the Old Harbour, surrounded by tall half-timbered buildings. A visit to Saint Catherine's Church, the largest wooden church in France, added to the charm of this Instagrammable spot.

Reflections and Future Adventures

As the cruise ended, I reflected on the special memories created, from wildlife encounters to cultural discoveries. This journey highlighted how cruising the English Channel can offer a blend of relaxation, adventure, and bucket-list experiences, all in one seamless trip. With plans for my next sail away already forming, I'm eager to explore more hidden gems along these shores.

For those interested, Ambassador Cruise Line offers itineraries like the Summertime Gardens of the Channel Islands & Northern France, with fares starting from £1,149 per person for an 11-night sailing from Tilbury in July 2026.
