London's Black Axe Mangal to Close After 10 Years of Service
Black Axe Mangal Closes Islington Restaurant

One of London's most celebrated and innovative restaurants, Black Axe Mangal, is preparing to close its doors in Islington after a remarkable ten-year run. Known recently as FKABAM, the establishment will serve its final meals to the public on 20 December 2025.

A New Chapter for a Culinary Icon

However, this is not a final farewell. The chef-patron, Lee Tiernan, has clarified that the closure of regular service marks a strategic 'pause' rather than a complete stop. The plan is to transform the restaurant's creative direction, focusing on hosting exclusive pop-up events and collaborations within the existing space. Tiernan described this move as a way to keep the work original and fun, changing things up while the experience still feels positive.

Celebrating a Decade of Innovation

Black Axe Mangal first opened in 2015, following a successful trial pop-up in Copenhagen the previous year. Founded by Lee and his wife, Kate Tiernan, the restaurant quickly gained a cult following for its unique approach. Lee, formerly head chef at St John Bread and Wine, pioneered a bold style of Turkish grill-inspired, nose-to-tail cooking.

The menu became legendary for dishes such as squid ink and cod’s roe flatbread, charred hispi cabbage with fermented shrimp butter, and crispy rabbit. The founders have promised that further details about a special event, 'A Decade of FKABAM', will be announced soon, offering fans a chance to celebrate the restaurant's impactful journey.

Looking to the Future

In a personal statement, Lee Tiernan expressed his gratitude to the talented team that has supported the restaurant, especially during a difficult year outside the kitchen. This support allowed the Tiernans to step back and focus on family, leading to this new decision. He affirmed his commitment to continuing the restaurant's unique culinary style, promising to 'turn up the volume' at future events and collaborations, ensuring the spirit of FKABAM lives on in a new, dynamic format.
