Enthusiastic fried chicken fans in London have set a new record for devotion, queueing for more than 30 hours for the opportunity to win free chicken sandwiches for life.
A Grand Opening for a Major Milestone
The incredible scene unfolded on Tuesday, November 25, as American fast-food giant Popeyes celebrated the grand opening of its 100th UK store at London Bridge. The first three customers through the door were rewarded with the ultimate prize: free Popeyes Chicken Sandwiches for life.
One particularly dedicated fan began their wait from 9pm the night before the opening, demonstrating an unparalleled level of commitment. The event drew people from across the country, with some travelling from as far as Oxford and Manchester to try and get their hands on the exclusive offers.
Celebrations and Nationwide Giveaways
The landmark opening was marked with festive flair, featuring a live orchestra to provide a melodic soundtrack for the hungry queue. Beyond the lifetime sandwiches, Popeyes gave away another 10,000 free Chicken Sandwiches nationally.
This wider promotion involved distributing 100 free sandwiches at each of its UK restaurants and drive-thrus, which in turn created significant queues at every location.
Festive Spirit and Future Growth
Embracing the festive season, Popeyes also launched a week-long celebratory deal. For a limited time, customers across the country can get a delicious Chicken Sandwich, chips, and a Coke for the special price of just £5.99.
Tom Crowley, CEO at Popeyes UK, commented on the achievement, stating, "Reaching our 100th restaurant is an incredible milestone, and it’s all thanks to our amazing fans and teams across the UK. London Bridge feels like the perfect place to celebrate - it’s iconic, full of energy, and right at the heart of the city."
The popular chain, which opened its first UK restaurant in Westfield, Stratford, in 2019, has created over 2,000 jobs in just four years. The company has ambitious growth plans, hoping to employ around 3,500 staff by the end of 2025.
